  • City declares emergency for garbage collection

    With its garbage trucks inoperable, the City of Cynthiana had to declare a state of emergency Tuesday night to enter into an agreement with Legacy Carting of Pittsburg, Ky., for the citys solid waste removal.

    Commissioners had previously agreed to get out of the trash collection business and were planning to receive sealed bids for that service. However, it was believed the city employees would continue to operate until Nov. 1.

  • Newberry announces candidacy for family court judge

    The retirement of Hon. Judge David Melcher has created a unique opportunity for a mid-term election to take place to fill his vacated seat on the Harrison County Circuit Court bench.

    Peter Newberry has announced his candidacy for Family Court Judge of the 18th Judicial Circuit, 2nd District, which includes Harrison, Nicholas, Pendleton and Robertson counties.

  • Fillies notch second win, down Grant County 5-0

    Winning cures a lot of ills, and the Harrison County Fillies soccer team appears to be on the road to recovery.

    On Monday night at LeBus Field, the Fillies blew open a close game, scoring four times in the second half and totally dominating the action as they crushed Grant County 5-0.

  • Museum Musings

    * Western Citizen, Paris, Ky., June 24,1864 - Col. George W. Berry, who was wounded in the battle of Cynthiana, died Friday morning last. He was buried on Sunday, a special train bringing up from Covington, several hundred citizens, to attend his funeral.

    GREGG, TAYLOR

    Courtnie Rhyan Gregg and Edwin Desha Taylor, both of Harrison County, were among the Summer 2008 semester graduates at Eastern Kentucky University.

    Gregg and Taylor were honored at commencement ceremonies July 25.

    Gregg received her degree in Health Services Administration; and Taylor received his degree in Career and Tech Ed, Teach.

    Owen Powell Letcher was born to Nicole and Kevin Letcher of Mt. Sterling, Ky. on Aug. 26, 2008 at Central Baptist Hospital, Lexington, Ky. He weighed 7 lbs. 3 oz.

    Maternal grandparents are Ellen and Bobby Franklin and Rollie and Sammie Anne Fortner of Princeton, Ky.; maternal great-grandmother is Sitter Fletcher of Princeton, Ky.

    Paternal grandparents are Jim and Judy Letcher of Cynthiana, and the late Judy Mitchell Letcher; paternal great-grandparents are Ruby and Eugene Letcher of Carlisle, Ky.

  • High school sports report

    The Harrison County volleyball team overcame a slow start and came back to defeat visiting Powell County in two straight games, 25-23 and 25-12.

    The Fillies had a hard time getting the first side-out as Powell County served its way to a 7-0 lead, prompting a time-out by Harrison County coach Bill Faulkner.
