  • Judge issues burn ban for Harrison County

    Harrison County residents are being told not to burn anything until the current weather patterns make a consistent change.

    On Monday, Judge-Executive Alex Barnett issued a total burn ban for the county, which exceeds the normal seasonal ban issued by the state.

    “The volunteer fire department has been making lots of runs on grass fires,” Barnett said.

    The ban covers all types of open burning county-wide. This expands the statewide regulation which prohibits burning within 150 feet of wooded areas between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.

  • All-America Selections for 2009

    I’ve followed the All-America Selections for as long as I can remember. It was always a designation that my father trusted and we often trialed the plants in our own family garden the year prior to their introduction. Some of the more memorable plants include ‘Purple Wave’ petunia, ‘Magestic Giants’ pansy mix, and the ‘Profusion’ zinnias. Sure, there were memorable vegetables in the past but it seems as though the AAS is responding to the increase in vegetable gardening interest by including more vegetables then ever each year.

  • Citizens concerned with state of affairs

    To the editor:

    I am a concerned citizen of Cynthiana and I am writing because it is a shame that working people can’t get help but people who are not working can get help.

    I’m speaking particularly of people on welfare and other government stuff. If this town can’t help working people then working people shouldn’t have to pay taxes for people who don’t work.

  • Book fair returns to HCHS library

    The new librarian at Harrison County High School is bringing back something which has been gone for some time - a book fair.

    From Oct. 27 through 31, the library will be host to a Scholastic book fair and will have special events and expanded hours to go along.

    On Monday, HCHS is having parent-teacher conferences. Librarian Stacy Cawley used that opportunity to expand library hours from 7:30 a.m. until 7 p.m.

    That way, she said, “Parents have a chance to get in.”

    Births announced this week are: Victoria-Anne Marie McIntyre, Oct. 1, daughter of James Darrell McIntyre and Stephanie Marie White; Chesney Brooke Taylor, Oct. 19, daughter of Chris and Amy Taylor; John Austin Webb, Sept. 21, son of John A. and Tina Faye Webb.

    The site for the MCC/Licking Valley Center was approved and will soon have a permanent home on the Hilltop. The campus will be located across from Harrison County High School and adjoining the vocational school. LVC will receive $2.5 million toward the project by Kentucky Gov. Paul Patton.

  • HCHS Fillies advance to district finals

    The Harrison County Fillies volleyball team got the toughest draw possible in the 38th District Tournament, but have met the first two challenges and earned a guaranteed spot in next week’s 10th Region Tournament.

    Fillies coach Bill Faulkner recognized how difficult the draw was, but also realized that facing the three toughest teams in the 38th District would serve his team well down the road.

  • City considers hiring more officers

    The Cynthiana Police Department may soon be four men stronger in its 16-member force.

    At a special meeting on Tuesday, commissioners voted to hire two police officer recruits after a lengthy discussion.

    Cynthiana Mayor Jim Brown wanted to hold off hiring the recruits citing the city would be better served if it could get two certified officers.

    The recruits must complete a 16-week academy in Richmond before being road-ready.

    Brown indicated that there may be certified officers interested in the positions from a neighboring department.

  • Hold off on fertilization for now

    Our current weather conditions demand that we rethink some of our fall chores.  Fall lawn and tree fertilization should come later this year then normal because of the drought conditions.  An application of high nitrogen now would only burn up what little green grass you may have and force trees to work more then they should under stressful conditions.

These are the questions in the minds of many Cynthianians two days before the palatial residence comes under the auctioneer’s hammer Saturday. The sprawling three-story, 27 room Victorian mansion will be sold by Cummins, Renaker, Whalen and Smith realty and auction firm at 10 a.m. on the premises. Monticello, built in 1883, is a Cynthiana landmark and was once a ‘showplace of the Commonwealth’ by the late Dr. Henry Bromley, who with Mrs. Bromley, held it until their deaths.
