  • District championship on the line tomorrow

    Without question, the biggest game of the current football season will take place tomorrow night when Harrison County’s biggest rival, the Franklin County Flyers, land at Ingles Stadium to take on the homestanding Thorobreds with the district championship on the line.

    The two teams are virtual mirror-images of each other. Both are 4-4 overall and 2-0 in district play. Both are prolific passing teams with veteran quarterbacks leading the way. Both have had explosive offensive games in wins, but both have seen their offense go south in most of their losses.

    4-H Club organization and

    project enrollment in progress

    We are meeting with all 4th and 5th graders and middle school students to give them an opportunity to enroll in 4-H for the upcoming year. In addition all high school students grades 9-12, St. Edwards Club and home school students are eligible to participate in 4-H. 4-H has a lot to offer the youth of Harrison County. The goals of 4-H include citizenship development, leadership development and learning how to do many things through 4-H projects and activities.

  • Feds indict 5 in bank robberies

    Five individuals from Cynthiana have been indicted by a federal grand jury in U.S. District Court on federal bank robbery charges.

    The four men and one woman are facing charges relative to six bank robberies, four of which were in Harrison County, with a total cache of $36,000, according to a Tuesday press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office Eastern District of Kentucky in Lexington.

    Sitting quietly on U.S. 62 West is a collection which has caught the eye of the foremost agency for record holding.

    Mary Mae Brooks was recently named to the Guinness Book of World Records™ for her astounding collection of Donald Duck-related paraphernalia.

    She’s been collecting the Donald Duck items for about 30 years, mostly because of her daughter Teresa’s love for the character.

    Sept. 18 at 6:10 p.m. -- Injury, Ky. 392, James C. Fryman, 26, Cynthiana, driving a 1987 Chevrolet S-10.

  • Mention of Welcome Wagon brought back joyful memories

    To the editor:

    This letter is in response to Mrs. Jean-Ann Kerr’s letter, which appeared in last week’s Democrat.

    I am one of Mrs. Emma Lou Wade, the Welcome Wagon lady’s, grandchildren. My Mamaw was a very special lady. In fact, she and my Papaw were wonderful people.

    It touched my heart to see that people, outside of our family, still remember her. I know how much she enjoyed doing the Welcome Wagon. She loved meeting new people, and she tried her best to make them feel welcomed.

    Monroe Christopher Ogden was born to Rodney and Mae Ogden of Cynthiana on Aug. 19, 2008 at Harrison Memorial Hospital.

    He weighed 6 lbs. 14 oz., and is welcomed by his brother, Rodney ‘R.J.’ Ogden Jr.

    Maternal grandparents are Larry and Inza Croft of Cynthiana and the late Monroe Neace; maternal great-grandparents are the late Corneilus and Martha Neace, Mayme Johnson and the late Hindman Johnson.

    William Brayden Turner was born to Brice and Sunshine Turner of Shelbyville, Ky. on July 5, 2008. He weighed 8 lbs., and is welcomed by his sister, Sabreena, and brother, Johnathan.

    Paternal grandparents are Bill and Rosemary Turner; paternal great-grandparents are Frances Hill and the late Bill Hill, and the late Gordon and Louella Turner, all of Cynthiana.

    Maternal grandparents are Steve and Cathy Sahloss of Shepherdsville, Ky. and Tony Douglas of Waddy, Ky.

  • Prescription drugs dominate third summit meeting

    Kentucky’s prescription drug tracking system was center stage at the third drug summit, sponsored by Champions for a Drug Free Harrison County last Tuesday, Sept. 30.

    Dave Hopkins, project manager for the Kentucky All Schedule Prescription Electronic Reporting system (KASPER), spoke to the crowd about the program and about the state’s prescription drug issues in general.
