    Nathaniel Allen Carson

    Nathaniel Allen Carson was born to Crystal and Josh Carson of Cynthiana on Nov. 24, 2008 at Harrison Memorial Hospital. He weighed 7 lbs. 10 oz.

    Maternal grandparents are Randy and Diana Herrington of Cynthiana; maternal great-grandparents are David and Judy Fryman and Betty Moore.

    Paternal grandparents are Jeff Carson of Cynthiana and Shirley Carson of Berry, Ky.; paternal great-grandparents are Charles Carson Jr. and Peggy Carson.

  • Memorial award continues to assist graduating seniors

    To the editor,

    In June of 2006 my parents were enjoying their retirement with a trip to Las Vegas, Nev. While they were there I received a phone call from my uncle stating that my mother, Carol Smith, had been taken to the hospital. I, along with my brother and sister, flew out to Las Vegas. The next day my mother passed away.

    Births announced this week are: Emily Morgan Florence, Nov. 2, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Florence; William Nicholas Gunther, Nov. 19, son of Karen and Michael Gunther; Austin Louis and Kirby Tyler Jackson, Nov. 27, twins of Gary and Becky Jackson.

    City and county agencies are having trouble agreeing on details of a joint ordinance (on the option for purchase of land for an Industrial Park) that would set the wheels in motion for development of a proposed industrial park.

  • Healthy food cooking demonstration planned for Dec. 8

    A healthy food cooking demonstration will be held at the Harrison County Health Department Frankie Casey Taylor Community room at 5 p.m. on Dec. 8. Please bring a recipe that could be modified to offer traditional ethic flavors, but with more health - conscious ingredients and preparation methods.

    Attendees are asked to sign up to ensure an adequate amount of food.

    Call Carol Carson at 859-588-5981 by Friday, Dec. 5 at noon. 

    This program is hosted by The Sisters Together Move More, Eat Better committee and Wedco District Health Education.

  • Many lessons in Recipe for Reading

    Harrison County fifth-graders traded in the classroom for a kitchen last week during the Recipe for Reading program.

    Planned and organized by the Harrison County Homemakers for the third year in a row, fifth-graders worked in groups with Homemaker volunteers to prepare recipes.

    Southside Elementary fifth-grade teacher, Debbie Kendall said the students always had fun cooking with the homemakers, but the Recipe for Reading program offered more than just a good time.

  • Howard joins advertising sales team

    A new face has joined the Cynthiana Democrat/Harrison Shopper advertising team.

    Calling herself an energetic person, Pam Howard said she is ready to get out and meet the customers.

    “I like to talk to people and I’m ready to get to know their business,” said Howard. “I’m a people person.”

    Howard will be working with businesses by helping them meet their advertising needs.

  • Christmas parade is Saturday

    Snowflakes shimmering along the downtown streets can mean only one thing -- it’s Christmas time, and Christmas time brings the annual holiday parade.

    It’s tradition.

    Anxious children and adults will line the streets of the parade’s path. There will be horses and carriages, floats and Scouts, antique cars and the marching band.

    It’s tradition.

    Watch for the tractors and the miniature horses. Surely there will be elves and one will certainly be the most jolliest of all -- Santa.

  • Court balks at recommended name for recreation park

    Calling it “a good faith effort,” Harrison County magistrates voted to give $500 to the Harrison County Tomorrow recreation development committee to be used toward a sign at the new park.

    Donna Williams, representing the committee, presented a proposal that was the result of a survey to name the park.

    She told members of the fiscal court that 10 names appeared on the survey and that those who responded to the survey chose “Veterans’ Park.”

    Magistrate Steve Moses said he was not in favor of the name.
