    Scarlett Rose Watts was born to Chris Watts and Ashton Moore of Cynthiana on May 29, 2011 at Harrison Memorial Hospital. She weighed 5 lbs. 10 oz.
    Maternal grandparents are Todd and Angie Moore of Cynthiana; maternal great-grandmother is Geneva French.
    Paternal grandparents are James and Janice Watts of Cynthiana.

  • Kaylin Destanie Marie Hively

    Kaylin Destanie Marie Hively was born to Kayla and Travis Hively of Cynthiana on Sept. 9, 2011 at Harrison Memorial Hospital. She weighed 5 lbs. 7 oz., and is welcomed by her sister Lyrik Nevaiah, and brother Kaiden Daniel.
    Maternal grandparents are Debbie Callahan and Doug Stanfield of Cynthiana; maternal great-grandparents are the late Iana and Bill Callahan, Nina Stanfield of Cynthiana and the late Clyde Stanfield.

  • Hall hosts Preceptor Omega Chapter’s Beginning Day luncheon meeting

    Preceptor Omega Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi held the Sept. 6 meeting at the home of Ann Hall. Patsy Barnett, president, called the meeting to order and thanked the Social Committee for planning the Beginning Day luncheon at Malone’s followed by viewing the movie ‘The Help.’ This event occurred on Aug. 13.
    Social chairman Pat Terhune shared plans for an outing to Keeneland in October. Linda Root announced the Omega will be assisting with Elk’s Bingo on Oct. 17. This is the main source of the Judy Mitchell Letcher Scholarship for a senior girl.

    HCHS CLASS OF 1951
    On Sept. 10 the 1951 Harrison County High School graduating class had their 6--year class reunion at Biancke’s Restaurant. There were 65 in the class, the first year of the consolidated school. This was a combination of Berry, Oddville, Renaker, Connersville and Buena Vista schools.
    As plans were being made for the reunion it was discovered that 31 members are deceased (almost half).

  • Young Farmers fall picnic is Oct. 2

    The Harrison County Young Farmers annual fall picnic will be held Sunday, Oct. 2 at the FFA farm off Old Lair Road.Everyone is welcome, just bring a dish to share (meat provided).

  • Naturalize the landscape with colorful sumacs

    You have probably noticed them in early fall along roadsides in Kentucky and Southern Indiana. The red, orange and purple color of the sumacs usually begins to show up earlier than others, and it usually hangs around a little longer, too.
    You would be hard-pressed to come up with a plant genus that is better for fall color than the sumacs. Whether you’re a flameleaf, staghorn or smooth sumac, fall color is your middle name.

  • FSA guaranteed loan limit increases

    The Farm Service Agency (FSA) lending limit for Guaranteed Loans will be increased to $1,214,000 effective Oct. 1, 2011.
    The lending limit increases every year according to an inflation index. The maximum combined guaranteed and direct farm loan indebtedness will also be increased to $1,514,000.
    As a reminder, the one-time loan origination fee charged on FSA guaranteed Farm Ownership and Operating loans will increase from one percent to 1.5 percent of the guaranteed portion of the loan, for loans obligated after Oct. 1, 2011.

  • Sales closing dates for USDA crop insurance programs are approaching

    Kentucky producers who wish to purchase a Federal crop insurance program policy for the 2012 crop year are reminded of the following closing dates:
    •Barley, wheat, Sept. 30, 2011.
    Insured growers have an opportunity now to make important changes to their coverage. Current policyholders as well as uninsured growers must make decisions on crop insurance coverage, especially which crops to insure and which level of coverage to obtain, prior to the sales closing date for that crop.
