  • New team joins Breds football district

    The Harrison County Thorobreds football district just got significantly more difficult after the KHSAA granted a request by Covington Holmes to drop in class from 5A to 4A for the 2009 high school season.

    Two weeks ago, Holmes requested a drop in football class through the KHSAA Board of Control citing a “significant drop in enrollment over the last three years.”

  • Governor urges use of Earned Income Tax Credit opportunities for Kentuckians

    Gov. Steve Beshear announced recently a campaign to encourage more Kentuckians to apply for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), a refundable federal tax credit for low- and middle-income working individuals and families.

    “The EITC is one of our best anti-poverty tools, and I want to make sure every eligible Kentuckian takes advantage of it and gets the money they deserve,” Beshear said in announcing the campaign.

  • Harrison County Tomorrow group making promotion plans for 2010 Equestrian Games

    In just 20 months, 600,000 visitors from 60 countries will be flocking to the  Bluegrass for the 2010 World Equestrian Games.

    How will Harrison County participate?

    That’s a multi-faceted question that a contingent of citizens are beginning to answer.

    Dr. Lori Garkovich of the University of Kentucky told about 30 people Monday that the group needs to concentrate on four questions:

  • Fillies defeat district rival Lady Black Devils

    The Harrison County Fillies earned a much-needed win on Tuesday night at home as they defeated district rival Deming, 47-36.

    Harrison County led 14-12 after the first quarter, but went on a 11-3 run in the second period to take a 25-15 halftime lead.

    In the second half, Harrison County was never headed, though the visitors from Mt. Olivet did pull to within six points midway through the fourth quarter. From that point forward, however, Harrison County distanced itself from the Lady Black Devils.

  • Grapplers finish 2nd in HCIWT

    The host Harrison County Thorobreds went 4-1 on the day and finished second overall in the annual Harrison County Invitational Wrestling Tournament on Dec. 27 at Harrison County Middle School gymnasium.

    The Breds registered wins in the dual meet format against Ashland Blazer, Danville, Dixie Heights and Montgomery County, and lost to eventual champion Seneca.

    Seneca went undefeated in its five matches. Seneca and Harrison County both had five wrestlers who won their respective weight classes.

    Preston Wayne Hughes was born to Barry and Pamela (Howard) Hughes on Nov. 20, 2008 at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, Ky. He weighed 9 lbs. 10 oz.

    Maternal grandparents are Gary and Sandra Howard of Paris, Ky.

    Paternal grandparents are Richard and Jane Hughes of Winchester, Ohio.

    Dec. 19 – At 10:29 p.m., police investigated a domestic situation on Pike Street.

    Dec. 24 – At 1:03 p.m., police investigated a domestic on Elm Street between a father and son. During the course of the argument, two vehicles were damaged.

    Dec. 24 – At 4:01 p.m. Andrea Byers, Ashwood Drive, reported that a computer, camera and camcorder were taken from her home. Value of the missing items was $1,400.

  • Moore to graduate from Berea College

    Cynthiana resident LeAnn Moore was one of 68 seniors who took part in Berea College’s Recognition Service for mid-year graduates on Dec. 7. The ceremony honors students expected to complete degree requirements by February 2009. Moore, who is majoring in German, is the daughter of Glen and Nancy Moore and granddaughter of Chuck Palmer of Cynthiana.
