The snow and ice storm of 2009 can be deemed nothing short of a challenge for many.

Those who met the challenge are nothing short of heroes.

Challenge came in the way of moms and dads trying to keep the family warm and fed without electricity. It came in the way of electric service men and women facing the elements to light the county. And it came in the way of road crews clearing paths on streets and roads not just for grocery-bound citizens, but for emergency responders as well.

The emergency shelter at Cynthiana Christian Church  is empty and on stand by after 44 Harrison County residents came to the church for a warm meal and a warm night’s stay this past week.

Shelter coordinator Gayle Velat said almost all of the individuals at the shelter returned home when their electricity was restored over the weekend.

Velat said cots and other materials would remain set up in the church throughout the week, in case of additional power outages.

February is “Heart Month” in Harrison County and the Harrison County Go Red for Women committee wants your help in “Painting This Town Red.” It’s easy, all you have to do is decorate your store windows in red or illuminate your homes and businesses with red lights.  Let’s get Cynthiana listed on the national Go Red website by showing our support.

The pairings for the 38th District Boys and Girls Basketball Tournaments were determined last Wednesday at a meeting held at the Harrison County Community Education Center.

For the fifth straight year, HCHS will host both tournaments. This year, the format will have the boys playing the first game on the first two nights of the tournament, with the four girls teams playing the two nightcap contests.
