Cynthiana Police Department gets new station through HUD funding. The Cynthiana Housing Authority received a $79,500 Housing and Urban Development grant, designed to eliminate crime in and around the public housing. The new CPD substation is located on Locust Street.

Direct TV buys out Primestar Inc. The acquisition was made by Hughes Electronic Corporation, a unit of General Motors Corporation, the parent company of Direct TV. The same company merged with United States Satellite Broadcasting (USSB).

One of the best things about January is all the good catalogs that come in the mail.  It is much easier to believe that spring will come again when you have a stack of catalogs that show glossy pictures of fruits, vegetables and flowers.  The extra time spent indoors by the fire also allows us to spend some time plotting and planning what we want to add to the garden in 2009.

When it comes to the home orchard or berry patch planning is indeed a good thing. 

As I write this, the nation is focused on Washington, D.C., and the inauguration of Barack Obama.            

However, my attention is eight or so miles away in Alexandria, Va.

My granddaughter, Caroline, turns 7 on Jan. 21.

While her festivities aren’t on the scale of an inaugural gala, on Sunday, Jan. 25, she and six of her friends are having a snowflake party. My daughter, Alison, has been planning it for months.

Residents at Cedar Ridge are warming up their arms and testing their skills as they prepare to compete in the Trilogy Championship Bowling Tournament.  Campus competition began the week of January 12, followed by divisional competition the week of January 19.  Championship competition began January 26th.
