  • Rylee Renae Ballinger

    Rylee Renae Ballinger was born to Tomas S. and Heather R. Ballinger of Cynthiana on Dec. 29, 2008 at Harrison Memorial Hospital. She weighed 8 lbs. 6 oz., and is welcomed by her brother, Tomas W. Ballinger.

    Maternal grandparents are Larry and Karen Gaunce of Cynthiana; maternal great-grandparents are Judy Withrow, Martha Gaunce, and Tommy and Alta Gaunce.

    Paternal grandparents are Paula and Troy Miller and Tomas P. Ballinger, all of Cynthiana; paternal great-grandparents are Pauline and Jr. Sosby and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ballinger.

  • Winter storm’s 1-2 punch

    When Harrison County Judge-Executive Alex Barnett looks at ice clinging to limbs and lines, he still sees the county’s biggest obstacle as the forecast.

    Another three inches of snow is expected to fall in Harrison County through the day on Wednesday along with dropping temperatures. Top that off with up to 20 mph winds and you could have real problems.

    Barnett said county crews are working with Blue Grass Energy to get to power lines that have succumbed to ice-encrusted limbs.

    “Our top priority is getting power back on,” Barnett said.

  • Cynthiana Housing Authority receives Self-Sufficiency Program grant

    U.S. Housing and Urban Development recently awarded Kentucky and 17 local agencies with $1.2 million for HUD’s Housing Choice Voucher Family Self-Sufficiency Program. The Housing Authority of Cynthiana was awarded $62,044 for the program that currently has 25 participants.

  • Kearns is fulfilling her career dream

    Little boys want to grow up to be firefighters or policemen. Little girls claim that being a ballerina, teacher or singer will be their career path.

    Not Kathy Kearns.

    “I always wanted to be the circuit clerk,” Kearns said after her appointment to fill Wanda Marsh’s term.

    Kearns, 45, began working as a deputy clerk in 1982. Her father, John William Kearns, was clerk at the time, a position he held for 37 years.

    When he retired in 1993, Marsh stepped in as circuit clerk and Kathy Kearns was named chief deputy clerk.

  • No school Friday

    There will be no classes in Harrison County for the rest of the week.

    Superintendent Andy Dotson cancelled classes as well as Kids Club for Friday .

    As of Thursday morning, Blue Grass Energy was still reporting 3,232 customers in Harrison County without power.

    About 200 line technicians and right-of-way personnel are working throughout BGEnergy’s system today, from states as far away as Alabama, to restore power to about 29,000 Blue Grass Energy members.

  • Fiscal court meeting postponed to Friday

    Due to the severe weather on Tuesday, the regular meeting of the Harrison County Fiscal Court was postponed. A special meeting will be held at noon on Friday and will be limited to the payment of the county’s bills.

  • Hudgins and Prows accepted to the University of Northwestern Ohio

    Tanner Hudgins, son of Robert Hudgins and Sandy Hudgins of Cynthiana, has been accepted to the University of Northwestern Ohio in Lima, Ohio to begin classes in June 2009 where he will be majoring in the Diesel Technician program.

    Hudgins attends Harrison County High School.

    Ethan Prows, son of Jerry Prows and Debbie Prows of Cynthiana, has been accepted to the University of Northwestern Ohio in Lima, Ohio to begin classes in June 2009 where he will be majoring in the Diesel Technician program.

  • Filing FAFSA early gives students better chance at state grants

    Kentucky students who plan to attend an in-state college or university in the fall should file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible. Students who file early have a better chance of receiving a state need-based grant administered by the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA). The FAFSA is available at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
