  • Early dismissal Mondays nixed for Harrison County schools

    Monday, Feb. 9, will be Harrison County schools’ last early dismissal Monday this year.

    During a special meeting Wednesday evening, Harrison County school board members voted to do away with early dismissal Mondays.

    Superintendent Andy Dotson said the extra hour of class time on Mondays will allow the district to make up for two of the 12 days it has missed this school year.

    Half of those days missed were related to the recent snow/ice storm.

    The board also voted for schools to make up another day on President’s Day.

  • Two lives claimed in wake of outage

    A Harrison County couple is dead and an investigation continues after supposedly high carbon monoxide levels filled James and Norma Penwell’s home on U.S. 27 North.

    A generator was found in the home last Thursday at 12:47 p.m. when Harrison County Sheriff’s Deputy Terry Barnes responded to a call from the couple’s daughter, who lived out of state and hadn’t heard from her parents in several days.

    When Barnes entered the home, he found the deceased Penwells.

  • Leaps of faith exercise trust in God

    The first thing I asked Sean Gebhard was, “Do people think you’re crazy?”

    Sean runs the Upper Room Café in Mount Dora, a cute little town about 40 miles east of where I live in central Florida.

    I had heard about his “Holy Spirit-filled café” upstairs in the historic Renaissance Building, and the last time we were in Mount Dora I stopped in to see it for myself.

    Susan Marie Box, the daughter of Terry and Charlotte Box, a 2002 graduate of Harrison County High School, graduated from Eastern Kentucky University in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Science. She is presently obtaining her Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy from EKU.

    Susan recently completed a clinical rotation at the Kentucky Horse Park in Hippo-therapy, involving the use of horses to optimize independence and maximize the quality of life for children with special needs.

    Jan. 30 at 12:10 a.m. -- non-injury, Friendship Road, William L. Kelly Jr., 47, Cynthiana, driving a 1997 International CB, struck John Adams, 35, Corinth, driving a 2005 Ford Explorer.

    James Joshua Muntz

    James Joshua Muntz was born to Eric and Julie Muntz of Fort Thomas on Feb. 6, 2009, at Bethesda Hospital North in Cincinnati. He weighed 7 lbs., 15 oz., and is welcomed by his sister, Becca Muntz.

    Maternal grandparents are Dan and Debbie Mullikin of New Richmond, Ohio.

    Paternal grandparents are Lewis and Cathy Muntz of Cynthiana.

  • If growth is requested, then it should be supported

    These sure are scary times. National and state budgets are strained, unemployment rates are at record highs, businesses are cutting back and local governments are declaring bankruptcy.

    It seems that now, more than ever, there’s little hope for the growth of a small community like Cynthiana and Harrison County.

    Long before our nation found itself in an economic crisis, many of us were scratching our heads and pondering what we could do to make our hometown of Cynthiana a success.

  • Who is St. Valentine, anyway?

    I suspect most of you have no idea about the person and the saintly episode that is commemorated each Feb. 14 by friends, family and most importantly, lovers. In fact, there are several versions of how the most romantic Saint became a commercial success.

    One story about St. Valentine has its origins in third century Rome where the Emperor Claudius II outlawed marriage for young single men because he valued them more as young warriors. A priest by the name of Valentine defied the law and continued to secretly marry the young soldiers who were in love.
