The eight teams are set for next week’s Girls’ 10th Region Basketball Tournament that will be played on the Hilltop. At press time, none of the four districts within the 10th Region had played their championship game, but the eight teams that will vie for the 2009 crown include Campbell County and Scott out of the 37th District, Harrison County and Deming from the 38th, Maysville St. Patrick and Bracken County from the 39th  and Clark County and defending regional champ Montgomery County from the 40th.

In post-season play, upsets usually occur when the underdog team gets off to a hot start and uses that momentum to sustain them for the rest of the game.

On Monday night, Pendleton County was that underdog team, but host Harrison County, the decided favorite, was the team that started quickly.

The Thorobreds, who defeated the Wildcats three weeks ago in Falmouth, 83-65, jumped to an early double digit lead and never trailed, beating Pendleton County, 69-52.

Nine students from Harrison County Middle School’s seventh grade Maroon Team have been designated as “Outstanding Young Spokesman of the Future” by the Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. This designation was awarded based on the student’s entry in the annual Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest.

Harrison County Circuit Judge Robert McGinnis is stepping down, but not really.

McGinnis retired on Jan. 31. However, he was assigned as a Senior Status Judge for the 18th Judicial Circuit, from which he retired, the very next day.

McGinnis said he wanted to continue as the circuit judge for Harrison, Pendleton, Nicholas and Robertson counties, but the senior status judge program was going to expire. He wanted to be part of that program.

“I wasn’t ready for retirement,” McGinnis said. “I hadn’t even thought about it.”
