  • 'When religion is your living, it's easy to grow weary'

    When religion is your living, it’s easy to grow weary. I get a taste of it every week when I sit down to write this column. First I have to think of something that’s not only entertaining and worth saying, but something that I feel God wants me to say.

    Then I have to make sure I’m as biblically accurate and as faithful to my particular denominational tradition (in my case Reformed theology — Go, Martin Luther!) as I can be without totally alienating the Baptists, Catholics and Pentecostals, etc.

  • Trimble to join Jazzercise staff at Bridge Street Plaza

    Amy Trimble, a newly certified Jazzercise instructor, will begin teaching along with Jennifer Terhune, Jamie Kinsey and Candida Wilson at the location in Bridge Street Plaza. Trimble completed a three-day workshop and performed an audition.

    Trimble recently participated in a workshop in Columbus, Ohio. She was required to learn approximately 10 routines for her audition; pass a written exam on basic anatomy, exercise physiology and nutrition; learn Jazzercise basic business practices; and become certified to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

  • Hatfield, Hicks lead Fillies to wins at Shirley Field

    The Harrison County Fillies earned a pair of come-from-behind victories at Shirley Field on Monday and Tuesday and improved their record to 3-2.

    On Monday, Charley Hatfield ripped a walk-off double off the center field fence to give the Fillies a 3-2 win over visiting Bourbon County.

    The Lady Colonels took an early 2-0 lead over the Fillies with single runs in the second and fourth, before Harrison County mounted its comeback.

    As expected, this last week was the busiest of the year’s 30-day “short session,” with a flurry of bills winning final passage and negotiations in conference over the details of others.

    Even facing a money crisis, in the end, our efforts resulted in legislation that will have long-lasting benefits to Kentuckians. From the war on drugs -- to the economy -- to better roads and education, we have accomplished a great deal in our time here.

  • Harrison County students win state speech awards

    After five years, Harrison County High School has a new speech champion.

    Aaron Williams, a senior at HCHS, won extemporaneous speaking at the Kentucky High School Speech League held March 13-16 at Western Kentucky University.

    “This was the cumulation of four years,” said Williams, who began the event in middle school.

    Participants in extemp are given a political question to answer and 30 minutes to prepare a seven minute speech.

    “You don’t actually write out the speech,” said Williams.

  • Breds, Fillies win first home track meet

    Last Tuesday, the Harrison County Thorobreds and Fillies won their first home track meets of the spring, defeating Nicholas County and Bracken County easily.

    The Breds garnered 13 first place finishes in the 16-event meet and won easily over second-place Nicholas County, 172-86. The Harrison County “B” team finished third with 43 points and Bracken County was a distant third with 19.
