  • Citizens honored at Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet

    Harrison County individuals and groups were honored Friday evening at the 2008 Chamber of Commerce’s 39th annual awards banquet.

    Held at the Cynthiana Country Club, the banquet recognized citizens as Businessperson of the Year, Citizen of the Year, Farmer of the Year, Educator of the Year and Volunteer of the Year.

    After 45 years of business at Woody’s Barber Shop, Woody Richie was recognized as the 2008 Businessperson of the Year.

  • Harrison County Fire Department gets new set of wheels

    The Harrison County Fire Department received one of two new fire trucks Monday afternoon at the Oddville station. With a price tag of $176,727, the truck is the first fire truck purchased since 1998. The truck was purchased by the county’s special tax district fund. “We’re hoping that this will help us improve our ISO testing,” said firefighter James McCarty. An improved ISO rating would possibly help homeowners lower insurance costs, McCarty said. The new fire truck will be responding to runs by the end of March, said fire chief Charlie Carson.

  • Local churches to participate in Harrison County Ministerial Association fundraising concert

    Cynthiana and Harrison County church members are lifting up their voices and joining with the Harrison County Ministerial Association to host a fundraising concert event on Sunday, March 15, at Rohs Opera House.

    “We want to put the HCMA name and/or ministry into the public’s eye and ear,” said HCMA vice president, the Rev. David Sabella of Covenant Presbyterian Church.

    The program will begin at 6 p.m. and will include guest vocalists/groups from churches around the county.

  • Road plan dependent on federal stimulus money and gas tax

    With the budget now law, the biggest task facing the General Assembly this legislative session is preparing a road plan for the remainder of this fiscal year and the next, which ends in June 2010.

    After talking with legislators about their priorities, House and Senate leaders met with Transportation Cabinet officials for hours during the last several weeks to hammer out a plan.  On Friday, the House voted overwhelmingly for this compromise proposal, which the Senate is expected to approve this week.
