  • Burley Belles battle course and heat

Cynthia Powell of Winchester, playing out of Andover Golf Course, won the Championship Flight in the 2012 Burley Belles on Sunday coming from behind to defeat Frankfort’s Donna McNeil by two strokes.
It was Burley Belle championship number 12 for Powell and it is doubtful any of the others were more challenging.
Although three of the championship flight withdrew due to the heat, including defending champ Anne Combs, the competition and the heat were formidable foes.

  • CCC to host ‘The Jungle’ this weekend

The Cynthiana Country Club will host the fourth annual “The Jungle” tournament this weekend beginning with practice rounds on Friday.
The event, sponsored by Palmer-Hampton Insurance and Real Estate, is named after the late Jim Letcher, who was an active member of the Cynthiana Country Club and instrumental in the success of this and many other events involving the whole community.
Letcher died on July 17, 2009, and the tournament has borne his name since that time. The tournament is the former member/guest contest.

  • Baseball half over, goodbye Andy

The half way point of the baseball season is here with the All Star Game played Tuesday night in Kansas City marking that dividing line.
It is actually a little more than half with teams having already played 84 or 85 games of the 162-game season. But if you throw in the month of playoffs, it is less than half way for many of the teams.
To date, the big spenders, with the exception of the Yankees, are not in first place in their division.
