  • Farming: A Furnish family event

Farming, for David Furnish, has always been a family event.

His farming days began when he was a young boy, under the direction of his father and alongside his six brothers and one sister.

“That’s why our family’s so close,” Furnish said. “If we didn’t do it (farm) together, there’s no way any of us could do it...”

Furnish was recently honored at the 2010 Chamber of Commerce awards banquet, where he was named Farmer of the Year.

  • Museum Musings

    * Early in 1994, a small group of people interested in this community and history agreed to establish a museum. I encouraged one of our local historians, the late George Slade, to write a column to promote the museum. George composed, I typed the column for him, named it “Museum Musings,” and submitted it to The Cynthiana Democrat for publication. This column first appeared in the paper on March 31, 1994. Thanks to the newspaper staff and to the community for their faithfulness to this column and to the museum. Martha Shropshire Barnes.

  • Being a winner means never having to say they cheated

I’ll have to admit that as an official sometimes I take up for them just because but most of the time I don’t. Especially basketball officials because, due to the nature of the game, I believe they sometimes call inconsistently. I don’t mean one official is inconsistent but that from one to the other they call and/or look for different things. But whatever you may believe about officiating some of the remarks that I heard and read after the games Saturday were kind of sad.
