  • Facts are all you’ll find here

“Just the facts, ma’am,” said Sgt. Joe Friday in nearly every segment of Dragnet.

Jack Webb portrayed Sgt. Friday in probably the first of many cop shows. He used that statement when a witness strayed too far from what he or she actually knew to be true and began to delve into hearsay or rumor.

I pulled those profound words from my memory recently when a plethora of rumors began circulating through our community gossip mill. Funny how they apply to my job as well.

    “Just the facts.”

  • New crop disaster assistance program implemented

Producers May Begin Applying for SURE Program at FSA County Offices on Jan. 4, 2010.

USDA has implemented the new Supplemental Revenue Assistance Payments program (SURE) in accordance with the 2008 Farm Bill. Producers are encouraged to visit their USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) county office beginning Jan. 4, 2010, to participate in the program if they suffered crop production losses during the 2008 crop year.

    To the editor:

  • More than an undefeated season

Indianapolis, despite being in Indiana, is not my favorite team in the NFL. The Colts are probably my second favorite team next to The Steelers, but I do like some others.

If I really do not like a team it is usually due to some player or coach who is on that team.

The Patriots, Jets and whoever Terrell Owens is playing for are teams that I cannot be for.

The dislike of the first two teams is because of the coaches whom I think are either over rated, a jerk or both.

  • Museum Musings

    * Cynthiana Democrat, Dec. 21, 1939 -- “Formal opening of the new Moravan Apartments, just completed for Mrs. G. E. Moore and daughter of Devonia, Tenn., will be held Sunday afternoon. The public is cordially invited to visit the new building and inspect the many features of Cynthiana’s most modern apartment building.”

    * Norman Vincent Peale -- “Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful.”

  • Don't ban smoking in Cynthiana

Smoking should not be banned from public places. It’s pointless to argue against it because the effects would be the same if you banned it.

Companies will lose smokers’ money. Non-smokers may choose to leave a restaurant if they wish. If you ban smoking it wouldn’t matter to peoples’ health because it’s still in the air, no matter what. If it’s banned, people will go elsewhere to buy their cigarettes and local tobacco sellers would go out of business.

In conclusion I believe smoking in public places shouldn’t be banned.
