  • Cynthiana men arrested in connection with Monday bank robbery

    Note: Information on this story was released after the print deadline for this week's edition of The Cynthiana Democrat. A complete story will be in the May 1 edition.

    Two Cynthiana men have been arrested in connection with a Monday morning bank robbery in Bourbon County.

    According to a Kentucky State Police report, Steve Perry, 28, of Cynthiana, was arrested and charged with robbery first degree, and tampering with physical evidence.

  • New superintendent hired

    The Harrison County Board of Education hired a new superintendent on Sunday.

    Andy Dotson, a native of Pikeville, Ky., was chosen from the list of finalists. Dotson is currently an employee of the Kentucky Department of Education.

  • Police arrest suspect in ATV heist

    A Cynthiana man was arrested Monday morning after having eluded police on a 4-wheeler Saturday night.

    Deputy Paul Olin of the Harrison County Sheriff's Department said Jeffrey Pratt allegedly took a 2007 Honda ATV from a garage on Walnut Street.

    Sonya Kiskaden reported the 4-wheeler stolen on Wednesday, April 9. She told police that Pratt asked her earlier to sell the ATV, but she declined.

  • EDA calls for state assessment of Harrison County

    The Cynthiana-Harrison County Economic Development Authority (EDA) voted last Thursday to put Harrison County on a list of counties to be assessed by the state.

    Darlene Bussell, development specialist for the Kentucky Cabinet for Economic Development, came to the meeting at the request of Dr. Ed Ford to present information about the cabinets community assessment program.

    Bussell said the assessment is designed to help communities be more attractive to industries.

    "It is to create jobs and help the local economy," she said.

  • Second interviews underway for superintendent

    A superintendent of Harrison County Schools has yet to be named.

    Board chairman Ed Taylor said that while they had anticipated naming the new leader following last Friday's meeting, it will now likely be the end of this week before that happens.

    He said four of the candidates are being called back for second interviews.

    The search committee recommended six individuals for the position, which is being vacated by retiring Dr. Roy Woodward at the end of the fiscal year in June.

  • Robbery attempt at Family Dollar thwarted

    A man wielding a knife entered the Family Dollar Store Monday afternoon demanding money. He got nothing.

    Sgt. Wilbur Gross of the Cynthiana Police Department said the man walked into the store about 3:30 p.m., showed the cashier a knife and asked for the money.

    "He told her to hurry, that he meant business," Gross said.

    During the robbery attempt, the manager came from a back room and the cashier shouted for help.

  • Charges stem from Sunday shooting

    A Cynthiana man is behind bars after a Sunday morning shooting on Robinson-Renaker Road.

    Officials say the shooting was the apparent culmination of an on-going battle between a Cynthiana man and his girlfriend's stepfather.

    Harrison County Sheriff's Deputy Chris Shields said Catesby "Casey" Bramel faces three felony charges in the incident. Bramel is charged with first degree assault, violation of a Kentucky emergency protective order/domestic violence order and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.

  • Body of drowning victim may not get to Honduras

    The young man who drowned in a farm pond last week had no family in the United States. Its unlikely that Egardor Lopezs family will be able to afford to have his body returned to Honduras.

    Lopez, 25, who was a tenant farmer for Billy McNees, died last Thursday after he jumped into a pond on the McNees property about 8:40 p.m.

    Deputy Robert Peak of the Harrison County Sheriff's Department, said Lopez was fishing with three friends and co-workers at the 400-foot by 115-foot pond when he stripped to his underwear, jumped in and swam the shortest distance across the pond.

  • HMH rededication is Sunday

    Harrison Memorial Hospital (HMH) will host the rededication and open house of its expanded and renovated facility this weekend.

    The rededication will be held on Sunday, April 20, 2008, at 1:30 p.m. Following the ceremony, guests are invited to take tours of the entire hospital, which includes the new $15 million, 45,000 square foot addition.

    The tours will go through the entire hospital and feature the major clinical areas. Department heads will be on hand to tell visitors about each areas specialty.

  • Drug sweep continues

    A Cynthiana couple was arrested last Wednesday afternoon on charges for allegedly selling cocaine.

    Carl Wayne and Rita Hitch of Sycamore Drive in White Oak Estates were arrested after police executed a search warrant at their home around 3:30 p.m. April 9.

    The Hitches were each charged with first degree trafficking a controlled substance (cocaine).

    They spent the night at the Bourbon County Detention Center and were released on $10,000 full cash bond each on Thursday.
