  • Prime Time Family Reading Time to be offered at public library

    Reading has the possibilities of opening doors throughout ones journey through life. It can take you places you may never get to visit other than through the pages of a book, but it can also lead you to a career.

    Prime Time Family Reading Time will get underway at the Cynthiana-Harrison County Public Library on Aug. 21. The six-week program is targeted toward needs-based families -- those with low literacy rates and low income.

  • City residents target of scam

    Two elderly Cynthiana residents have been at the center of a scam that has netted the suspects over $14,000.

    Ptl. David Powers of the Cynthiana Police Department said a man and woman went into a home on Pearl Street on July 24 under the guise of measuring for insulation. Powers said the woman had been planning to do some home remodeling and had a large amount of cash in a lock box.

  • Pratt's sister indicted

    While police are continuing their search for escaped bank robbery suspect Jeffrey Pratt, another bank heist has occurred in neighboring Falmouth.

    Pratt's sister is also now facing charges for aiding his escape from Mt. Olivet.

    On Wednesday, Aug. 6, about 9:30 a.m., a man entered the Farmer's National Bank in Falmouth and demanded money.

    Harrison County Sheriff Bruce Hampton said Kentucky State Police asked that his deputies review the video to see if they saw any similarities between Pratt and the bank robber.

  • Agencies battle over maintenance of two city parks

    The spirit of cooperation normally exhibited at the joint city-county government meetings eroded Tuesday as commissioners, magistrates and recreation board members held a lengthy and vigorous debate on the rec boards funding.

    At issue: The citys apparent demand that the rec department mow the Rev. Ross Park and the Pleasant Street park.

    Both of those parks are city-owned and do not fall under the umbrella of the rec department. In fact, the Rev. Ross Park has its own committee.

  • Jesus Rocks concert is Aug. 30

    The Hilltop will be rocking with Christian music at the end of the month.

    Jesus Rocks is Saturday, Aug. 30, from 7-9 p.m. Its in the Harrison County High School auditorium and is free to the public.

    Wed like to see the community come together for this event, said show organizer Jeff Gaunce.

    The show features Lafollette, with members who live in the Shelbyville area, and the Josh Martin Band, which has roots in northern and central Kentucky.

    Both play contemporary Christian music.

  • Railroad crossings will be closed next week

    CSX Railroad has announced that Cynthianas four railroad crossings will be closed at various times during Aug. 4-8.

    Assistant Chief of Police Ray Johnson said according to a letter from CSX, crews will be working to install new cross ties during the day, but will re-open the crossings at night.

    Not all of the crossings will be closed at the same time. He said its likely that Oddville Avenue and Pleasant Street will be closed Monday and Tuesday, followed Wednesday and Thursday with Bridge and Pike streets.

  • Back-to-school means shots and records updates

    The Harrison County Health Center provides a wide variety of services for the school age child. For school aged children, up-to-date immunization certificates are also required by the school.Required immunizations are available for every school age child under 18.

    Parents of preschoolers, kindergarten and sixth grade students need to schedule a physical for their child prior to the beginning of school. Costs for exams at the Health Center are based on a sliding fee scale. This scale takes into consideration the number in the household and household income.

  • DOMESTIC VIOLENCE: Reported cases double over last five years

    Judge David Melcher is waiting for a family court docket without a domestic violence case.

    Hes not holding his breath.

    In fact, during the last five years, domestic violence cases have been on the rise.

    During all of 2003, there were 40 new domestic violence cases filed in Harrison County.

    Melcher said that number more than doubled by 2007 with 83 new cases being filed.

    Its not just a Harrison County problem either, Melcher said. In neighboring Pendleton County, there were 33 cases in 2003, compared to 75 last year.

  • City sidewalks slated for repairs

    Gov. Steve Beshear came to Cynthiana this week bearing the gift of a $247,000 check to be used for sidewalk demolition and replacement.

    The Safe Routes to School grant will provide allow students to walk and bike to school in greater safety, Beshear said.

    Numerous state and local dignitaries as well as about 25 school-aged children were on hand to welcome the governor at Southside Elementary Monday morning.

    These are not merely grants, Beshear said. These are investments that will enhance the quality of life in the community of Cynthiana.
