  • Commission candidates sound off on city issues at Monday night forum

    Candidates for Cynthiana City Commission had an opportunity to speak to voters Monday night in a forum sponsored by The Cynthiana Democrat, which was attended by about 60 people.

    Moderated by Charlie Garnett, the commission hopefuls were asked a series of questions by panelists Gary Brunker, a former commissioner, and Becky Barnes, Democrat editor.

  • Guardsman with local unit killed

    Daniel Wallace, 27, of Dry Ridge, Ky., was killed over the weekend in Afghanistan.

    Wallace was deployed with the C Company 201st Engineering Battalion of Cynthiana.

    He was a graduate of Grant County High School.

    A press conference was scheduled for Monday afternoon in Frankfort. There will be more information released as it becomes available.

  • Election Tuesday

    The long-awaited general election will wrap up Tuesday when the polling places close at 6 p.m.

    Harrison County, Cynthiana and Berry voters will be making selections for local leaders as well as presidential.

    Locally, voters in the Southside, Clifton Village, City Fire Department No. 2, library, sheriff’s office, part of Eastside and Westside precincts will be choosing four Cynthiana City Commissioners.

  • Trick or Treat will be Oct. 31

    Cynthiana’s city commissioners voted to move Trick or Treat back to Friday, Oct. 31, after having set a new date for Nov. 1 last week.

    Commissioner Bill Doan said the front office at City Hall had received 42 calls after the commission’s decision to set Trick or Treat for Saturday, Nov. 1.

    Doan went on to move for the change back to Oct. 31 after Mayor Jim Brown declined to make a motion.

    “The decision was made a couple of years ago to keep it on Oct. 31 and I believe there was wisdom behind that decision,” said Doan.

  • Thieves hit southwest area houses in early morning

    The Harrison County Sheriff’s Department is investigating three burglaries that occurred over the last week.

    Deputy Wayne Fryman was called out Friday to a home on Russell Cave Road where it appears tools were the target.

    According to Fryman’s report, James Riddell said the burglary had to have occurred sometime between 4:30 and 8 a.m.

    Thieves took power tools and hand tools, weed trimmers and chain saws.

    On Tuesday, Deputy Steve McCauley investigated two burglaries in the same area.

  • 21 homeless after Wednesday fire

    An early Wednesday morning fire has left 21 people homeless.

    Just after 5 a.m., Cynthiana 911 received a call from inside the home that the house at 107 Locust St. was on fire.

    Assistant Chief Charles Carson said he immediately sounded the second alarm for all off-duty firefighters when he saw the fire. He said from the front all that was visible was the smoke. However, when he went to the back of the home, he could see the fire.

    “I knew it was more than five of us could handle,” he said.

  • Feds indict 5 in bank robberies

    Five individuals from Cynthiana have been indicted by a federal grand jury in U.S. District Court on federal bank robbery charges.

    The four men and one woman are facing charges relative to six bank robberies, four of which were in Harrison County, with a total cache of $36,000, according to a Tuesday press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office Eastern District of Kentucky in Lexington.

    Sitting quietly on U.S. 62 West is a collection which has caught the eye of the foremost agency for record holding.

    Mary Mae Brooks was recently named to the Guinness Book of World Records™ for her astounding collection of Donald Duck-related paraphernalia.

    She’s been collecting the Donald Duck items for about 30 years, mostly because of her daughter Teresa’s love for the character.

  • Prescription drugs dominate third summit meeting

    Kentucky’s prescription drug tracking system was center stage at the third drug summit, sponsored by Champions for a Drug Free Harrison County last Tuesday, Sept. 30.

    Dave Hopkins, project manager for the Kentucky All Schedule Prescription Electronic Reporting system (KASPER), spoke to the crowd about the program and about the state’s prescription drug issues in general.

  • Judge issues burn ban for Harrison County

    Harrison County residents are being told not to burn anything until the current weather patterns make a consistent change.

    On Monday, Judge-Executive Alex Barnett issued a total burn ban for the county, which exceeds the normal seasonal ban issued by the state.

    “The volunteer fire department has been making lots of runs on grass fires,” Barnett said.

    The ban covers all types of open burning county-wide. This expands the statewide regulation which prohibits burning within 150 feet of wooded areas between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.
