  • Operation SEND community wide event is Nov. 13

    Operation SEND (Sending, Encouragement to our Nation’s Deployed) community wide event will be held Nov. 13 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Harrison County fair grounds. Everyone is welcome to come and help pack the donated items. 

    Materials can be brought that night or dropped off at: Aurora Information Systems, 105 Joe B. Hall Court, Cynthiana, KY  41031, phone (859) 234-8353. The event is sponsored by Cornerstone Christian Church and Military Missions. There are already about 100 addresses of folks from the 201st and other units serving from Harrison County.

  • Band finishes ninth in semi-finals

    For the first time since 1992, Harrison County’s Marching Thorobred Band was not among the finalists in the running for a state championship.

    HCHS competed at South Oldham High School on Saturday in the 2008 KMEA Class 4A state semi-finals.

    There were 16 competing bands for each class: 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A, 5A. Harrison County went on 12th, having earned a top eight seed at last week’s regional quarterfinals.

  • Court to help senior citizens with van purchase

    The Harrison County Fiscal Court voted Tuesday to help the Senior Citizens’ Center in its quest to buy a new van.

    Center director Teresa Gray and Harrison County Commission on Aging representative Tom Kearns came to the court’s special meeting in Berry asking for $5,000 toward the cost.

    “I’ll be right up front with you,” Kearns said. “We need help.”

    He said the center bought a van under a special program in 2005, but it has been plagued with issues since.

  • School board approves class trip for spring break

    The Harrison County Board of Education said no to a senior class trip not scheduled during spring break, but yes to a Charleston, S.C., trip during spring break.

    Before the senior class officers made their presentation, board chairman, Ed Taylor, cautioned that the board would not consider any proposal that was not in accordance with the board’s policy.

    “No matter when we go, we’d just love to go, “said Brooke Razor, class president.

  • HCHS band qualifies for ‘Sweet 16’

    The Harrison County High School Marching Band has earned a berth in the Class 4A semi-finals which will be this weekend.

    Sixteen bands will be competing for four finalist spots. If selected as a finalist, the band will perform Nov. 1 at the University of Louisville’s Papa John’s Stadium, said Chris Hedges, band director.

  • Four candidates in running for Family Court Judge

    Four candidates have filed to run in the Nov. 4 general election for Family Court Judge of the 18th Judicial Circuit. Those candidates were given a questionnaire and the following is their responses.

  • Bracken County Sheriff's deputy arrested Friday

    A Bracken County Sheriff's deputy was arrested Friday morning in Falmouth.

    According to a release from the Kentucky State Police, Frank Smith Jr., 39, Brooksville, was arrested for trafficking a controlled substance second degree. The arrest occurred about 11 a.m. Friday at the McDonald's in Falmouth.

    Making the arrest were members of the Kentucky State Police Drug Enforcement Special Investigations East Command along with troopers from  KSP Post 6.

  • Commission candidates sound off on city issues at Monday night forum

    Candidates for Cynthiana City Commission had an opportunity to speak to voters Monday night in a forum sponsored by The Cynthiana Democrat, which was attended by about 60 people.

    Moderated by Charlie Garnett, the commission hopefuls were asked a series of questions by panelists Gary Brunker, a former commissioner, and Becky Barnes, Democrat editor.

  • Guardsman with local unit killed

    Daniel Wallace, 27, of Dry Ridge, Ky., was killed over the weekend in Afghanistan.

    Wallace was deployed with the C Company 201st Engineering Battalion of Cynthiana.

    He was a graduate of Grant County High School.

    A press conference was scheduled for Monday afternoon in Frankfort. There will be more information released as it becomes available.

  • Election Tuesday

    The long-awaited general election will wrap up Tuesday when the polling places close at 6 p.m.

    Harrison County, Cynthiana and Berry voters will be making selections for local leaders as well as presidential.

    Locally, voters in the Southside, Clifton Village, City Fire Department No. 2, library, sheriff’s office, part of Eastside and Westside precincts will be choosing four Cynthiana City Commissioners.
