  • Himes awarded Miss Kentucky’s community service, academic honors

    Katie Himes won the Miss America Community Service Award in the Miss Kentucky pageant Saturday, July 14.
    Though she was not selected as a Miss Kentucky finalist this year, she received $1,000 for her award.
    Himes said the community service award along with the academic award are two of the highest non-finalist awards.
    Himes was one of 31 contestants in the Miss Kentucky pageant, which is a preliminary for the Miss America pageant.

  • Bass Webb enters guilty plea

    Bass Webb entered a guilty plea to the murder of Bryia Runiewicz on Wednesday afternoon in Pendleton County. Less than 15 minutes after the last potential juror entered the courthouse for jury selection, Webb's attorney's announced that he would accept a plea agreement.

    To the charge of murder and persistent felony offender, the Commonwealth recommended 50 years in prison to run consecutively with a 15-year sentence in Fayette County for a total of 65 years.

    Tom Griffiths, defense attorney, said everyone was in agreement with the plea deal.

  • Indictment issued in child sexual abuse case

    A Harrison County man is accused of sexually abusing children and has now been indicted by a grand jury.
    Donald Silcox, 55, faces an eight-count indictment in connection with the alleged abuse of children under 12 years old and under 16 years old.
    According to the indictment handed down last week, Silcox is charged with sodomizing three little girls. The charges stem from incidents that allegedly began around May 1 and continued through June 8.
    The grand jury charges that Silcox engaged in deviate sexual intercourse with the girls.

    The Miss Kentucky pageant is taking place this week, with Katie Himes of Harrison County competing to win the crown.
    Himes said Thursday, July 12, and Friday, July 13, are the preliminary rounds and Saturday, July 14, is the finals.
    Himes is competing as Miss Harlan County in the state preliminary Miss America pageant.
    She said there are 31 contestants competing for the title of Miss Kentucky.
    Himes said pageant contestants represent different titles from all around the state.
