  • Memorial service held for Kayla Poteet at LeBus Field Thursday

    On what would have been her 17th birthday, teammates, classmates, teachers, friends, and family gathered Thursday evening at LeBus soccer field to remember Kayla Poteet.

    A junior at Harrison County High School, Poteet was killed in a car accident Monday, Nov. 24.

    “I’ll never step on this soccer field without thinking of her,” Fillies assistant soccer coach Jeff Kinney said during the memorial service.

    The Fillies varsity and junior varsity soccer teams played a scrimmage on the field before the service, in Kayla’s honor.

  • A Limo Ride and Lunch

    Twenty Northside Elementary students were treated to a limousine ride and lunch at Applebee’s in Georgetown Tuesday morning. The students were rewarded for selling 25 or more items during the school’s Cherrydale Fundraiser.

  • School cuts may be deep

    A mandatory 4 percent cut in funding for the Harrison County School District, as could be directed from Gov. Steve Beshear as early as Friday, would not cripple finances for the balance of this fiscal year, but it could prove alarming for next year, according to Julie Asher, district financial officer.

    Harrison County High School Students of the Month for November were Julie Henson, sophomore, daughter of Pam and David Henson, and Tyler Hardin, junior, son of Tom and Cindi Hardin. Sponsor for the month was Dr. William Faulkner.

  • Veterans seeking assistance can go to three central locations

    Veterans and their families seeking benefits assistance will be able to find help and advice at three central locations in Williamstown (Grant County), Georgetown (Scott County), and Frankfort (Franklin County).

    The Veterans Benefits Field Representative for Grant, Henry, Owen, Pendleton, Gallatin, Carroll, Bracken, Trimble, Scott, Harrison and Franklin counties will now be providing assistance at the following locations, which will allow Veterans Benefits Field Representatives to help veterans and their families more effectively:

  • Santa letters are requested

    The Cynthiana Democrat has been contacted by Santa Claus to help him make his list. Santa will make all the decisions about who has been naughty and who has been nice. The Cynthiana Democrat has agreed to help out by printing children’s Christmas wish letters in the newspaper.

    Children’s letters must be received at The Cynthiana Democrat’s Webster Avenue office by 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10. They may be dropped off, mailed to P.O. Box 160, Cynthiana, KY 41031, or e-mailed to rsmiley@cynthianademocrat.com. They must include the child’s name.

  • Three guilty pleas in bank robberies

    Three of the five individuals accused of robbing or being accomplices to area bank robberies have entered guilty pleas to their charges. The remaining two will be on trial next week.

    On Friday, Nov. 26, Jeffrey Allen Pratt, 30, pleaded guilty to two central Kentucky bank robberies in U.S. District Court in Lexington.

    Pratt admitted to robbing the Oddville Avenue branch of Farmers National Bank in Cynthiana on Aug. 18 as well as the Farmers National Bank in Falmouth on Aug. 6. The two banks are independent of each other.

  • HCHS junior killed in wreck

    Harrison County High School is mourning the loss of a classmate after a Monday afternoon car wreck on KY 36 West.

    The vehicle, a four-door 1997 white Toyota Camry,  carrying four HCHS students, was traveling eastbound toward Cynthiana around 4:30 p.m. when the vehicle ran off the road and struck a tree on the passenger side, according to Harrison County Sheriff’s Deputy  Dean Hutchison, accident reconstructionist.

  • Many lessons in Recipe for Reading

    Harrison County fifth-graders traded in the classroom for a kitchen last week during the Recipe for Reading program.

    Planned and organized by the Harrison County Homemakers for the third year in a row, fifth-graders worked in groups with Homemaker volunteers to prepare recipes.

    Southside Elementary fifth-grade teacher, Debbie Kendall said the students always had fun cooking with the homemakers, but the Recipe for Reading program offered more than just a good time.
