  • Harrison County couple is dead after possible carbon monoxide poisoning

    A Harrison County couple is dead and an investigation continues after supposedly high carbon monoxide levels filled James and Norma Penwell’s home on US 27 North.

    A generator was found in the home Thursday at 12:47 p.m. when Harrison County Sheriff’s Deputy Terry Barnes responded to a call from the couple’s daughter, who lived out of state and hadn’t heard from her parents in several days.

    When Barnes entered the home, he found the victims dead.

  • Classes resume with one-hour delay on Tuesday

    Harrison County missed its fifth straight day of classes on Monday following the paralyzing snow/ice storm that blanketed much of the state.

    However, it appears that classes will resume on Tuesday on a one-hour delay.

    Superintendent Andy Dotson said Monday morning that  two key elements had to be considered. There are still numerous homes without power and the condition of bus turn-around areas were in question.

    Dotson said it may be better in some cases to have classes to get children out of homes that don’t have electricity.

  • Public hearing set for U.S. 27 North bulk food store proposal

    A public hearing will be held Tuesday, Feb. 10, to determine if an Amish bulk food store should be allowed on U.S. 27 North at Carr Road.

    Allen Yoder made a request to the Planning and Zoning Commission. However, the commission deadlocked on the issue.

    The fiscal court is now charged with deciding the future of Yoder’s plans.

    County Attorney Bill Kuster said the court will receive public comment at the hearing.

    Cedar Ridge residents, staff and guests sang to Katie Wilson Friday afternoon in celebration of her 101st birthday on Saturday.

    “Thank you, honey,” Katie said to the worker that presented her with a cake. “It’s just beautiful.”

    Maria Kuster, Cedar Ridge director of resident programs and activities, said at 101 years old, Katie was an inspiration to everyone at the facility.

  • Hospital gets golden nod on accreditation

    After a week-long on-site survey by its accreditation program, Harrison Memorial Hospital has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval.

    HMH Chief Executive Officer Sheila Currans said the commission’s survey results helped validate the success and high standards of the regional hospital.

    “We try to live by these standards,” Currans said about the regulations placed on the hospital by The Joint Commission, which has accredited HMH since 1973.

  • Budget for 2009-2010 school year may be "bleak"

    The Harrison County School Board approved a draft budget for the 2009-2010 school year at Tuesday evening’s school board meeting.

    “This is the worst it’s been in the eight years I’ve been here,” said Director of Finance Julie Asher.

    Asher said she was meeting daily with Superintendent Andy Dotson and Assistant Superintendent DeeGee Fischer to come up with possible plans for cutting the school district’s budget to coincide with possible additional funding cuts from the state.
