  • Cynthiana Housing Authority receives Self-Sufficiency Program grant

    U.S. Housing and Urban Development recently awarded Kentucky and 17 local agencies with $1.2 million for HUD’s Housing Choice Voucher Family Self-Sufficiency Program. The Housing Authority of Cynthiana was awarded $62,044 for the program that currently has 25 participants.

  • Kearns is fulfilling her career dream

    Little boys want to grow up to be firefighters or policemen. Little girls claim that being a ballerina, teacher or singer will be their career path.

    Not Kathy Kearns.

    “I always wanted to be the circuit clerk,” Kearns said after her appointment to fill Wanda Marsh’s term.

    Kearns, 45, began working as a deputy clerk in 1982. Her father, John William Kearns, was clerk at the time, a position he held for 37 years.

    When he retired in 1993, Marsh stepped in as circuit clerk and Kathy Kearns was named chief deputy clerk.

  • No school Friday

    There will be no classes in Harrison County for the rest of the week.

    Superintendent Andy Dotson cancelled classes as well as Kids Club for Friday .

    As of Thursday morning, Blue Grass Energy was still reporting 3,232 customers in Harrison County without power.

    About 200 line technicians and right-of-way personnel are working throughout BGEnergy’s system today, from states as far away as Alabama, to restore power to about 29,000 Blue Grass Energy members.

  • Fiscal court meeting postponed to Friday

    Due to the severe weather on Tuesday, the regular meeting of the Harrison County Fiscal Court was postponed. A special meeting will be held at noon on Friday and will be limited to the payment of the county’s bills.

  • Hudgins and Prows accepted to the University of Northwestern Ohio

    Tanner Hudgins, son of Robert Hudgins and Sandy Hudgins of Cynthiana, has been accepted to the University of Northwestern Ohio in Lima, Ohio to begin classes in June 2009 where he will be majoring in the Diesel Technician program.

    Hudgins attends Harrison County High School.

    Ethan Prows, son of Jerry Prows and Debbie Prows of Cynthiana, has been accepted to the University of Northwestern Ohio in Lima, Ohio to begin classes in June 2009 where he will be majoring in the Diesel Technician program.

  • Filing FAFSA early gives students better chance at state grants

    Kentucky students who plan to attend an in-state college or university in the fall should file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible. Students who file early have a better chance of receiving a state need-based grant administered by the Kentucky Higher Education Assistance Authority (KHEAA). The FAFSA is available at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

  • Let's Battle

    Northside Elementary student Hunter Griffith, far right, looked out at the large audience gathered at Harrison County High School auditorium to watch the intermediate level of Battle of the Books. Griffith was part of the winning team Wednesday afternoon, with Northside Elementary scoring the most points in the annual event that tests students’ knowledge over the titles, authors, and facts for selected books. The event is hosted by Harrison County school librarians.

  • Cedar Ridge residents participate in Wii bowling tournament

    Residents at Cedar Ridge are warming up their arms and testing their skills as they prepare to compete in the Trilogy Championship Bowling Tournament.  Campus competition began the week of January 12, followed by divisional competition the week of January 19.  Championship competition began January 26th.

  • Mr. President: "We have chosen hope over fear"

    During the 54th inaugural ceremony, the 44th man raised his right hand in oath to the United States of America.

    As he addressed the public, President Barack Obama never wavered in his hope for a brighter future.

    “Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. There will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America -- They will be met,” he said. “On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord.”
