    Births announced this week are: Logan Matthew Greenlee, July 23, son of Capt. N. Thomas and Kim Greenlee; Jacob Wayne Howard, Sept. 6, son of Robert and Sharon (Himes) Howard; Courtney Laine Newsom, Sept. 15, daughter of Nicole Nichols and Tommy Newsom.

    Eighteen months after over 400 families were forced from their homes by the 1997 flood, Cynthiana will soon receive funds to begin the mitigation buyout from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). FEMA will fund 75 percent of the $1,393,550.

  • I just saw the biggest stinging caterpillar I have ever seen; my fascination with insects makes this an exciting event at the farm. I had never seen a stinging caterpillar until about five years ago. More accurately, I had never really looked for them until I read an article by University of Kentucky entomologist Ric Bessin back in 2003. He wrote that we should to be wary of stinging caterpillars this time of the year.

    Chandler Elizabeth Vaughn was born to Mia Wright Vaughn and Kiley Vaughn on Aug. 13, 2008 at Georgetown Community Hospital. She weighed 7 lbs. 1 oz.

    Maternal grandparents are John and Marsha Wright of Bourbon County; maternal great-grandparents are Elizabeth Wright of Bourbon County and the late Walton Wright of Bourbon County, Linda Soper of Nicholas County and the late John E. Soper Jr.; and H.C. Judy of Lexington and the late Millie Soper Judy.

  • * Cynthiana Democrat, Sept. 18, 1930 -(Drought of 1930) - Falmouth city water works is furnishing great amounts of water daily to the L & N Railroad Company at this point. Owing to the drought, there is no available water at Cynthiana or Paris and all trains passing over this division are taking water at this place for their engines. Falmouth is now the only place that trains can take water between Covington and Winchester, a distance of 100 miles. Winchester gets her water from the Kentucky River at Boonesboro and Falmouth pumps her supply from the Licking River.

    Cameron Lee Allen Moore was born to Patrick Moore and Shannon Gaunce of Cynthiana on Sept. 5, 2008 at Harrison Memorial Hospital. He weighed 7 lbs. 5 oz.

    Maternal grandparents are Jimmy and Joann Gaunce of Cynthiana; maternal great-grandparents are James and Janice Gaunce of Bourbon County, Allen and Betty Dampier of Harrison County, and the late Joyce Dampier of Nicholas County.

  • Annabelle Renea Burkle

    Annabelle Renea Burkle was born to Matthew and Alicia (Brunker) Burkle at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus on June 2, 2008 weighing 8 lbs. 6 oz. She is welcomed by her brother and sister, Blake and Skylar.

    Paternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Gary Burkle of Upper Arlington, Ohio.

    Maternal grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Brunker of Cynthiana.

    Great-grandmothers are Mary Lois Brunker and Ruby McCauley of Cynthiana, and Mrs. Thurley Zabor of Cleveland, Ohio.

  • Connor Clay Perraut

    Connor Clay Perraut was born to Brad and Tiffany Hicks Perraut of Castle Rock, Colo. on Aug. 15 at Skyridge Medical Center in Lonetree, Colo. He weighed 5 lbs. 9 oz.

    Maternal grandparents are Billy and Diane Hicks of Cynthiana.

    Paternal grandparents are Daryl Perraut of Cynthiana and Betty Perraut Kearns of Paris.

    Great-grandparents are Ruby Moses and the late Bill Moses, Bill and Marie Hicks, Ruth Ann Perraut, and Ann Chamblin, all of Cynthiana.

  • * Western Citizen, Paris, Ky., June 24,1864 - Col. George W. Berry, who was wounded in the battle of Cynthiana, died Friday morning last. He was buried on Sunday, a special train bringing up from Covington, several hundred citizens, to attend his funeral.

  • GREGG, TAYLOR

    Courtnie Rhyan Gregg and Edwin Desha Taylor, both of Harrison County, were among the Summer 2008 semester graduates at Eastern Kentucky University.

    Gregg and Taylor were honored at commencement ceremonies July 25.

    Gregg received her degree in Health Services Administration; and Taylor received his degree in Career and Tech Ed, Teach.
