  • The Women’s Club of Harrison County held their June 8 meeting at the Cynthiana Christian Church.
    In the absent of Bonnie Teater, president, Virgie Wells presided at the meeting.
    The blessing was given by Willie Sims and the Spiritual values by Mike Coppersmith, pastor of the First Methodist Church.
    After lunch Anna Ruth McLoney introduced Joe D. Hendricks and Tammy Bruce who provided the music program.

  • Lakyn LeAnn Green was born to John and Helen Green of Berry, Ky., on May 22, 2012 at Harrison Memorial Hospital.
    She weighed 8 lbs. and is welcomed by her brothers, Weston Lea, A.C. Green, and Blake Green.
    Maternal grandparents are Garr and Marsha White of Cynthiana.
    Paternal grandparents are Rick and Evea Green of Williamstown, Ky.

  • * Log Cabin, Oct. 5, 1901 -- “The officers of the Harrison Deposit Bank, which is to begin business here, Dec. 1, have purchased Mr. R. L. Jameson’s brick building at the corner of Pike and Walnut, the price being $4,500. The building will be remodeled and arranged most conveniently for the banking business.”
    * Cynthiana Democrat, May 3, 1906 -- “Fiscal court meets, grants the Cynthiana and Claysville Railroad Co. permission to construct tracks across the necessary pikes and dirt roads between this city and Claysville.”

  • I think about food so much this time of the year because vegetables abound.  
    I just came home from working at Courtney Farms in Bagdad, Ky., with a load of vegetables that will be presented to Community Supported Agriculture subscribers for a weekend gathering of shared experiences and shared food.  
    We are combining our farming efforts to bring food to local families and that includes the pretty things that can be added and eaten in the mix.

  • When it comes to traveling, my oldest daughter thinks she’s cursed.
    I don’t know about “cursed,” but she definitely has had her share of mishaps.
    Last summer she and granddaughter Caroline took a trip from their home in Virginia to visit my other daughter in Charlotte, N.C.
    The three of them went to Charleston, S.C. and Caroline barfed, which put a damper on their plans. Then Caroline stayed sick, ending Alison’s plans for a side trip to visit a friend on the way home.

    Shakers and the Civil War. Thursday, June 21 at 7 p.m. at the Cynthiana-Harrison County Public Library. Presented by Susan Hughes from Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill. This is a joint presentation of the public library and the Harrison County Historical Society.
    FRIDAY, June 22
    HCHS Marching Band Fundraiser. The event will take place Friday and Saturday, June 22 and 23 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the old  HA Jones parking lot, Cynthiana. Yard sale, crafts, vendors are welcome. Call 859-298-4796 for a spot. Cost is $25.

  • Woody and Bonnie Richie, married on July 1, 1962, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary at a reception given by their children Kelly Richie Brooks, Margaret Richie Johnson and Donald (Carol) Richie.
    Along with their children and friends, they will also celebrate with their grandchildren, Benjamin Brooks (Tampa, Fla.), Matthew and Elizabeth Brooks (Cynthiana), Andrew Duckworth (Lexington), Gabrielle Richie (Cynthiana) and Reagan Gorman (Cynthiana).
