  • The Harrison County Young Farmers is planning their local banquet on March 25, 2013 at the Harrison County Extension Office. Meal will begin at 7 p.m. with guest speaker Warren Beeler with the Ky Dept. of Agriculture to follow.
    The group meets on Monday nights at the high school  at 7 p.m. Some upcoming speakers that are planned are Mike Meyer on March 4 doing a farm safety meeting and on March 12 Dr Michell Arnold UK Extension Veterinarian.

  • Yes, the age old question about which came first springs to mind this time of the year as the stores start to stock the shelves with chicken raising paraphernalia.  
    We have a total of 130 chicks in brooders in the basement and garage.  
    There are two sets:  including 3-week-old Brown Leghorns and Araucanas intended to join our laying hens once they have fully feathered; and another set of 100 Freedom Rangers intended for the pasture of the nut grove where they will range and grow to broiler weight for a May 7 appointment at the processors.

  • Curves International announces its 15th Annual Food Drive, “Feed the Need,” and challenges Curves’ club members in the U.S. and Canada to meet a 100,000 donation goal during the two-week period of March 11-23.  
    Each club, including Curves of Cynthiana, is asking its members to donate bags of non-perishable food or cash to support their local community food bank.  

  • Cynthiana Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) will present a home vegetable garden workshop on Saturday, March 16, 2013, from 9-11 a.m. in the church fellowship hall.  
    This workshop is open to the community and designed to encourage and educate first-time gardeners on growing their own vegetables.
    Speakers are experienced local gardeners, including County Extension Agent, Gary Carter.

    Appal Seeds Workshop. Thursday, March 7 at 5:30 p.m. at the Cynthiana-Harrison County Public Library. This workshop will delve into the details surrounding heirloom tomato seeds from Appalachia. Participants will need to pre-register by calling 234-4881 or by stopping by the library’s front desk.
