  • The Mary Henson Circle of Elmarch Methodist Church met Tuesday, June 5 for their monthly meeting. Pauline Copes, president, called the meeting to order. Judy Richie led in prayer and gave the devotion.
    Each member present told their fathers name and spoke of loving memories of their father.
    Doris Fryman read a poem ‘Noble Eagles’ written by her nephew Jerry Dan Sipe, Sargent first class. The group shared pictures of their father.
    The blessing was given by Fryman before lunch.

  • If you have a garden chances are you appreciate nature in all its glory.  
    But, sometimes nature gets in the way of our desires to cultivate.  
    Deer browsing, rabbit munching, squirrel digging, bird pecking, mole trenching and resident vole feasting have all come up in the last two weeks.  
    While I have no silver bullet for any of these problems, I do have some practical approaches to offset the shared use of our gardens.  
    Squirrels are notorious for taking one bite of a tomato and then throwing it on the ground.  

  • The Harrison County Fairboard is sponsoring the Community Gospel Sing at the fairgrounds on July 8 at 6:30 p.m.

  • This year’s Cynthiana Idol contest was one of the best in its five-year history. Eighteen contestants auditioned in April but by the end of four weeks only one remained.  
    Mason Jessie, 24, beat out finalists Kelsie Renee and Whitney Tobin to win the contest. Other semi-finalists were Brooklin Wiggins, Aleesha Tapp and David Gauze.  
    To win, Mason had to impress a panel of judges and garner enough audience votes to get through four rounds of performances. However, the final win came down to 100 percent audience vote.

  • Robert F. (Bob) and Gertrude Mynear (Trudy) McGuire will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary on Saturday, June 16, 2012, in the fellowship hall, the Sidney Haviland Room, of the Cynthiana First United Methodist Church from 2-4:30 p.m.  All friends and family are invited to attend.
    Bob and Trudy were married June 16, 1962, in the Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Greeneville, Tenn. The Rev. Dr. Olin Troy and the Rev. John Speer officiated.
    No gifts please.

  • Loghan Lou-Ruth Whitaker was born to Zack Whitaker and Casey Lou Ecklar of Cynthiana, Ky. on May 9, 2012 at Harrison Memorial Hospital. She weighed 6 lbs. 6 oz.
    Maternal grandparents are Gary and Sandy Ecklar of Cynthiana; maternal great-grandparents are Bobby and Jean Holland and Rex Ecklar and Carlene Ecklar.
    Paternal grandparents are Darrell and Melody Whitaker of Berry, Ky.; paternal great-grandparents are the late Raymond Whitaker and Ruth Whitaker and James “Shorty” Gaunce and the late Beverly Gaunce.

  • Cole Riley Swearingen was born to Clint and Rebecca Swearingan of Cynthiana on April 23, 2012 at Harrison Memorial Hospital. He weighed 9 lbs. 7 oz.
