  • Parkey and Helen Thompson of Flemingsburg, Ky. are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. They were married on Nov. 11, 1961 in Berea, Ky. and have four children. They are Parkey Jr. (Lisa) Thompson of Cumming, Ga., Tammy (Doug) Switzer of Cynthiana, Tracey (Steve) Rials of Union, Ky. and Kevin (Angie) Thompson of Mayslick, Ky. They also have 12 grandchildren.

  • Oct. 17-24 was Federal Radon Action Week according to The Surgeon General. Health agencies throughout the United States have joined forces to promote awareness of the leading cause of lung cancer for non-smokers.  The American Lung Association, Centers for Disease Control, and National Cancer Institute all agree that radon is a National health problem and encourage radon testing during the October awareness drive.

  • Homemakers Winter Day Trip. Dec. 8, cost $50, deadline to register is Nov. 11 or until bus is full.
     
    Homemakers Craft Marathon. Saturday, Nov. 5, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Stop by the Extension Office to see crafts that will be made and to register.

  •    Leaf raking is an autumn chore that only children enjoy because they get to undo it in one fowl swoop.  We rake and pile, and they jump.  

       I propose a new approach that just may make us all happy: Adults can still rake a little, children can still play and trees will benefit from some mulch and fertilizer. At the farm, raking leaves is passé; we let them stay where they fall (within reason, of course) which is usually beneath their canopy.

  • Ballots for the 2011 Farm Service Agency (FSA) county committee elections will be mailed to eligible voters Nov. 4, 2011. The deadline for eligible voters to return ballots to their local FSA offices is Dec. 5, 2011.


  • The Harrison County Beef Cattle Association will be having their annual meeting of the local association on Monday, Nov. 7 at the Harrison County Extension Office. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. with a meal followed by the program and business meeting.

    The Berry Christian Church bazaar will be held Saturday, Nov. 12 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., featuring local artists, Tupperware, premier jewelry, Rada knives and crafts. Items on hand or special order available.
