  • Emily Paige Craycraft was born to Steven A. Craycraft II and Rebecca K. Craycraft of Cynthiana on April 21, 2011 at Harrison Memorial Hospital. She weighed 8 lbs. 7 oz., and is welcomed by her brothers, Jacob, Nicholas and Matthew Craycraft.
    Maternal grandparents are Larry and Karen Tubbs of Millersburg, Ky.
    Paternal grandparents are Steve and Sherry Craycraft of Cynthiana.

    The Nichols family reunion will be held July 10 at Kincaid Lake State Park in Falmouth, Ky. A potluck meal will be served at 1 p.m. at the big shelter. All friends and relatives are invited.

Thompson advising that the uncultivated Jimson weed they have been gathering is to be received and weighed at the E. M. Smith and Son hardware store here Saturday afternoon. A buyer-representative is to be here to purchase the offering. Thompson said that the Jimson weed is being used as medicinal ingredient.”

    Birth announced this week are: Dylan Joseph Scott Harris, May 26, son of Jessica Riggle and Simon Harris.
    Father Louis Brinker retires from St. Edward Catholic Church. Brinker was ordained into the Diocese in 1950, and was transferred to St. Edwards on July 1, 1983.
    Robert Gregg, Harrison County band director, is stepping down as the band’s leader. A reception is being planned.
    On-Call Supply opens in community is located at 213 S. Walnut St. and is owned and operated by Scott and Kris Humphrey.

  • Who among us is guilty of not noticing it until it’s too late?  
    Yes, all of a sudden there is nothing left of your blue spruce or arborvitae.Bagworms have been munching on the needles for weeks and we wonder how it all happened.  
    Well, they are at work right now so go outside and take inventory of your evergreens because that’s what the bagworm likes the most. Now is the time they do their damage unless we put a stop to it.
    Ten years ago or so I saw the worst bagworm infestation I have ever seen in my life.

  • If you are a female or a Hispanic farmer or rancher and you believe that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) improperly denied farm loan benefits to you for certain time periods between 1981 and 2000 because of your gender or race, you may be eligible to apply for compensation. “We want all producers in Kentucky who may be eligible to have the opportunity to participate in this claims process,” said John W. McCauley, Kentucky Farm Service Agency State Executive Director.

    Central Christian Church at Second and Riggs in Belmont, hosted a “late” Father’s Day dinner on June 26. Delaying the dinner to allow families to celebrate at home for Father’s Day allowed more than 50 people to attend the church celebration.
    The public is invited to the next Father’s Day celebration which will begin at 12:15 in June of next year. Make plans to attend now.

  • I’ve recently discovered the secret to getting rid of internal turmoil and stress – I’ve stopped listening to news talk radio and political talking heads shows on TV.
    Instead, I listen to my iPod – music and podcasts of sermons and science, food and history. It’s amazing how my inner agitation and anxiety have gone way down, and I haven’t missed a thing. I still know what’s going on in the world – I do work for a newspaper – without having to endure all the yelling.
