  • The Cynthiana Chapter of the DAR met at Biancke’s Restaurant on July 13. Regent Kesterson called the meeting to order and welcomed members. Judith Gatling was welcomed as a transfer member.
    The DAR Ritual, the Pledge of Allegiance, the American’s Creed, and the Preamble were recited, followed by singing of the Star Spangled Banner.
    There was no President General’s or National Defense message.
    Members were asked to subscribe to the “American Spirit” magazine as the chapter earns points for doing so.

  • SLADE-MARTIN-CRISWELL-RANKIN
    The Slade-Martin-Criswell-Rankin reunion will be held Sunday, Aug. 11 at Benson United Methodist Church on Ky. 1744. A potluck meal will be served around 1 p.m.

    MASTIN
    The 90th Mastin reunion was held Aug. 3 at the Cynthiana Presbyterian Church. A total of 66 family and friends were in attendance. Carla McCauley Harney called the family together for the meal and asked Joe Judy to offer prayer.

  • Local ventriloquist, Kevin Barnett, recently attended the 37th annual ConVENTion, a gathering of over 600 ventriloquists from around the world.
    Each year the ventriloquists gather for their annual international convention sponsored by the Vent Haven Museum, the world’s only museum dedicated to ventriloquism. Barnett attended the gathering held July 17-20. Attendees this year came from as far away as Germany, Brazil, Australia, India, Switzerland, Norway, France, and Israel as well as from across the United States.

  • ODDVILLE CHRISTIAN

    A gospel music jubilee will be presented at Oddville Christian Church on Thursday, Aug. 1 at 6:30 p.m. with Ward Jackson of Connersville Church. Free admission. The jubilee is presented at the completion of each seven weeks of study on Christian living.

  • Years ago I wrote a book about idols, which is just another word for sin.

    An idol is whatever you turn to first — a person, possession, position, relationship, substance, belief or experience — for comfort, security, identity, meaning, etc. Basically, anything other than God.

  • Likely as a child you collected fireflies in a jar and took them to bed to light up your room on a warm summer night.  
    I remember getting my parents to puncture the lid of a mason jar so the magical insects could breathe.  
    Well, it turns out that all that light flashing wasn’t meant for our entertainment  but rather about entertaining love.
    Researchers at Tufts University and Bringham and Woman’s Hospital have been observing the flashes of fireflies for a decade of summers and what they have uncovered may surprise you.  

  • Vonda Renea Kearns and Jonathan Michael Gaunce announce their engagement and forthcoming marriage.
    The wedding will take place Oct. 19, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Edwards Catholic Church. The reception will follow at the Elks Lodge of Cynthiana. Formal invitations are being sent, but all family and friends are welcome.

  • Hope Elayne Davis was born to Russell and Emily Arnold Davis of Lexington, Ky. on June 22, 2013 at Central Baptist Hospital.
    She weighed 5 lbs. 14 1/2 oz., and is welcomed by her brother, Hank.
    Maternal grandparents are Lemuel E. and Peggy Pepper Arnold of Cynthiana.
    Paternal grandparents are Nelson and Carol Kizer of Lexington, Tenn., and Kenneth Davis of Lexington.
