Brown purchased what was then known as the ‘Broadwell’ home, later known as the Elks’ Home, now the site of several beautiful residences (corner of Pike Street, Clifton Road). At that time it was an ideal location for that which it afterwards became, ‘Harrison Female College’ as the old residence had many rooms of ample size and the surrounding grounds were spacious and well shaded.”

    Births announced this week are: Brooklynn Paige Gaunce, May 10, daughter of Tony and Christin Gaunce; Hunter Dwayne Linville, May 18, son of David and Angela Linville; Tommi Ann Russell, May 9, daughter of Robbie Russell and Melody Morgan.
    Snappy Tomato, a Northern Kentucky pizza delivery chain, opened in Cynthiana on June 2, and is located at 219-9 Walnut St. (Bridge Street Shopping Center). Mike Gayhart is the owner of the new business.

  • Water Aerobics to begin June 17

    A Water Aerobics class will begin Monday, June 17 and continue through Monday, Sept. 2. Classes will meet at the Cynthiana Country Club pool from 9-10 a.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Fees for the class are $50, payable to the Cynthiana Country Club, plus $1 for each class attended, paid to the instructor.
    The $50 fee is waived if the participant is a full or limited member of the Country Club. Registration will be immediately before class on June 17.

  • Deadline for SURE program applications is June 7

    The Farm Service Agency (FSA) will continue to accept SURE applications for 2011 crop losses through June 7, 2013. The SURE Program provides payments to producers when crop revenues are less than the crop guarantee.

  • Dairy Goat Awareness Week June 8-15

    Area dairy goat breeders will celebrate Dairy Goat Awareness Week with the American Dairy Goat Association, www.adga.org during the week of June 8-15.   
    The Northern Kentucky Goat Breeders Association will sponsor an information booth and free goat cheese tasting at the Harrison County Farmers Market, Flat Run Veterans Park, on Saturday, June 15 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. You are invited to come taste the goat cheeses of Susan Miller’s Bleugrass Chevre.   • Dealing with carpenter bees

    I absolutely do not approve of killing bees. In fact, we are in a bit of a crisis with a diminishing population with the suspected cause being the use of pesticides, notably neonicotinoids. I do not fear bees, I am not allergic, and I can happily co-exist…..except that they are eating my house! Or, rather they are tunneling into the wood that makes up my house so they can lay eggs and have lots of babies.

    Months ago I wrote a story for the newspaper about community leaders’ vision for the future.
    Their vision is hugely aggressive, daring, interesting and bordering on the implausible. In this economy when businesses are closing right and left, their vision is downright laughable to some naysayers.

  • Dawsons to observe 50th anniversary

    Jerry and Charlene McCauley Dawson will observe their 50th wedding anniversary on June 15. The couple was married at Republican Christian Church by the Rev. Ben Moore, assisted by Marvin Johnson, in June of 1963.
    In honor of this occasion, a reception will be held on Sunday, June 9 at the Cynthiana Christian Church from 2-4 p.m. Friends and family are invited to attend. Please, no gifts.
