  • Gilkerson/Gilkison family reunion

    The Gilkerson/Gilkison family reunion will be held Saturday, Sept. 7 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Legion Hall, Legion Road, Paris, Ky. Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m.

    Bring a covered dish for sharing, soft drinks of your choice. Utensils, plates, napkins, lemonade and coffee will be furnished. Bring your family tree information and anything you would like to display.

    Jocelyn Crysta Houg was born to John and Amanda Houg of Cynthiana on May 14, 2013 at Harrison Memorial Hospital.
    She weighed 7 lbs. 1 oz., and is welcomed by her sister Aiyanna and brother Jaxan.
    Maternal grandparents are Johnna and Chris Blair of Cynthiana.
    Paternal grandparents are Kathy Caswell and John Houg of Cynthiana.

    * Cynthiana News, Feb. 25, 1869 -- “We have learned from the president of the Covington and Lexington Railroad, that he will build a platform from Pike Street, next to the Smith House, to the depot. A good proposition and a good improvement.” (This would have been a great proposition and improvement. The Smith House remains.)
    * Log Cabin, May 6, 1898 -- “They are worth 10 cents, but Biancke’s is making the finest of ice cream sodas with fruit flavors for only 5 cents.” (2013 - and still going strong - Biancke’s! Congratulations!)

  • Sawflies strip dogwood foliage

    One of the very first insects that I identified as a young gardener was the pine sawfly. We had planted over a hundred white pine seedlings over 30 years ago and after a decade or so we started to lose a couple each year to one problem or another. Daddy charged me with inspection duty. Looking for and plucking bagworms; collecting beetles in jars for identification at the County Extension Service; or closely noting the color, legs and chewing habits of the various caterpillars I encountered.

  • Faulkner-Estes exchange vows

    Dr. Olivia Mae Faulkner and Dr. Ryan Patrick Estes were united in marriage on Saturday, June 22, 2013 at half past six o’clock. Faulkner is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. William B. Faulkner of Cynthiana, Ky. Estes is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Estes of Henderson, Ky.
    The ceremony took place at Calvary Baptist Church in Lexington, Ky. The Rev. Owen Chandler, friend of the groom, Tucson, Ariz. officiated.
    The bride was escorted by her father and given in marriage by her parents.
