  • Crabgrass’s history reveals its multiple uses

    After the big rain we had, I hit the weeds, most of which involved wrangling ever-expanding globs of crabgrass.  
    Yes, this is the time when crabgrass rears its ugly head and begins to creep through our fescue lawns, sneak into our cultivated beds and, when we’re not looking, reseeds itself to ensure the continuation of the species.
    Okay, maybe a little melodramatic but my hands still hurt from all that pulling.

    10 Years Ago...
    Birth Announcements: Jada Marshall Ewalt, Justin Tyler Neace, Kenzei Marie Simpson, and Hannah, Katherine and Meredith Judy.
    A new nuclear medical scanner was installed at Harrison Memorial Hospital. The new scanner had a faster camera, higher resolution and more comfortable experience for patients.
    Ft. Thomas artist Martha Best finished her mural on the side of Flower Depot at 208 S. Main St. The mural was created through a Bluegrass Personal Responsibility in a Desirable Environment grant.

    Josie Wyles Ammerman was born to Jeffrey and LeAnn Lemons Ammerman on June 5, 2014 at Central Baptist Health in Lexington.
    She is welcomed by her sister, Lauren Ammerman.
    Maternal grandparents are Roger and Debbie Sowder Lemons; maternal great-grandparents are Robert Wyles “Lightning” Rorer and the late Nellie Sowder Rorer, and William and Rhoda Lemons.
    Paternal grandparents are Linda Harney Ammerman and the late William Ammerman; paternal great-grandparents are the late Sebree and Alice Ammerman, and Irvin and Edna Harney.

    Aldo Grear Farmer was born to Nick and Ashley Farmer of Cynthiana on May 7, 2014 at Harrison Memorial Hospital.
    He weighed 6 lbs. 4 oz.
    Maternal grandparents are David and Kathy Grear of Cynthiana; maternal great-grandparents are Glenn and Cathy Grear and Katherine Midden and the late Leo Midden.
    Paternal grandparents are Nancy Farmer and Garland Farmer, both of Cynthiana; paternal great-grandparents are Gerald and Bonnie Whalen.

    Isabelle Elizabeth May Young was born to Johnathon B. and Stephanie J. Young on June 17, 2014 at Central Baptist Hospital, Lexington, Ky.
    She is welcomed by her sister, Amber Nicole Valerie Young.
    Grandparents are Charles and Edith Young, Jerry Cooley, and Valerie Stephens Cooley, all of Cynthiana.
    Paternal great-grandmother is Roxie May of Pike County, Ky.

    GILKERSON/GILKISON
    The Gilkerson/Gilkison family reunion will be held Saturday, Aug. 30 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Legion Hall on Legion Road in Paris, Ky. A potluck meal will be served at 12:30 p.m.
    Bring a covered dish, soft drinks. Utensils, plates, napkins, lemonade and coffee will be furnished. Also bring family tree information.

  • New horticulture agent is ‘breath of fresh air’ for county

    Jessica Barnes has had a busy summer – graduating from the University of Kentucky in May, getting married in June and starting her new job as horticulture agent for the Harrison County Extension Office in July.
    The Connersville native started as an intern in the summer of 2013 under Gary Carter, the agriculture and natural resources agent for the Extension office. Quickly she learned that she was needed as people began to ask her questions about their plants.

  • Riggins has Yard of the Month

    The Yard of the Month winner for August is Lillian Riggins on Hicks Road.  This yard has the “wow” factor.  

    Lillian’s gardens are very unique with rock works, recycled lawn decorations and a pleasing mix of annuals and perennials blooming in sequence.
