  • Museum Musings

    * Our hearts are truly saddened at the passing of our Dorothy - Dorothy Florence Slade - the finest example of a lady, a dedicated wife and mother.
    * Dorothy steadfastly worked side by side with her husband of 60 years, Harold. Together, they almost entirely created the Cynthiana-Harrison County Museum. For the past 22 years, they maintained the museum, they restored cemeteries, they preserved history, they shared history.

  • Whitley Rae Vance

    Whitley Rae Vance was born to Sara Whitley and Chad Vance on Jan. 6, 2016 at Harrison Memorial Hospital.
    She weighed 6 lbs. 15 oz., and is welcomed by her sisters, Chloe and Layla Vance.
    Maternal grandparents are Stanley R. (Butch) and Gina Whitley; maternal great-grandparents are Glenda Lang and the late Fred Lang; and the late Stanley and Sherry Whitley.
    Paternal grandparents are Darell and Debbie Vance; paternal great-grandparents are Arnetta Vance and the late Owen Vance; and Betty Adams and the late Joe (Curly) Adams.

    For more than a decade the month of April has been about saving and healing lives. Donate Life champions across the country fill the month of April with powerful testimonials to demonstrate the lifesaving message of donation and transplantation. The goal of National Donate Life Month is to make LIFE possible by educating and motivating individuals to register their decision to be organ, eye and tissue donors.

  • Be a green consumer

    What can we do to impact the environment less? Be a green consumer. Walk or ride a bike, when you can; reuse things and if you can’t at least recycle them. Buy less stuff that you don’t need? All are easily done, really, but what about in our gardens as we struggle to keep things beautiful during the growing season?
    Images of aphids on my perennials; squash vine borers turning my plants to mush and Japanese beetles devouring the hybrid tea roses cause me to grimace.

    Births announced this week are: Haleigh Nicole Sharp, Dec. 16, daughter of Petty Officer Third Class Darrell J. Jr. and Virginia Browning Sharp; Makayla Rae Soard, Jan. 19, daughter of Chandlea and Roger Soard; Kaitlyn Alexis Sosbe, Feb. 20, daughter of Charles Andrew (Andy) Sosbe and Shawnda Carol (Hedges) Sosbe.
    A kite-flying festival will be held April 1 at the Cynthiana-Harrison County park on Oddville Avenue. The event is free and open to anyone who wishes to participate.

  • Cynthiana DAR holds March meeting

    The Cynthiana Chapter of the DAR met at the Cynthiana-Harrison County Public Library on March 12.
    Vice Regent Jane Whitehead called the meeting to order. We were happy to have KoryBeth Whitehead as our guest.
    The DAR Ritual, Pledge of Allegiance, American’s Creed and the Preamble to the Constitution were recited, followed by the singing of the Star Spangled Banner.
