    News anchor for WKYT-27, Lexington, Amber Philpott (formerly of Harrison County), visits Westside Elementary on 100th day of school and met up with her grandfather Goebel White. She is the daughter of Gary and Theresa Philpott and the granddaughter of Eula Philpott and Gayle White.

    The North Central Kentucky Chapter of Project Linus invites the community to participate in its Make-A-Blanket Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21, at the First United Methodist Church, 1280 Lexington Road, Georgetown.

  • Some perennials perform best in winter

    The garden is not bare in the winter, far from it. There is plenty of interest to delight the gardener, feed the birds or provide shelter for a slug.  
    Short of having one of those unusual winters where the temperatures drop below zero for more than a week, there are quite a few interesting herbaceous perennials that persist through winter.  
    Design a perennial bed with them in it and you’ll always have something to enjoy.

    Zakk and Jennifer Duckworth Weddle announce the birth of their son James William Augustus Weddle.
    He was born Jan. 5, 2015 at Mercy Hospital in Springfield Mo., weighing 6 lbs. 12 oz.
    Maternal grandparents are Barry and Lisa Duckworth; great-grandmothers are Wanda Henderson and Wilma Duckworth.
    Paternal grandparents are Annette and Tim Cooper, and Michael Paul; great-grandparents are Bob and Connie Weddle and Jerry and Sara Paul.

  • Turner-Harmon to wed April 18

    Mr. and Mrs. Jeffery R. Campbell announce the engagement of their granddaughter, Christina Lynne Turner to Gregory William Harmon, son of Don and Joanne Harmon of  Edgewood, Ky.
    Turner is a 2008 graduate of Harrison County High School.
    The wedding and reception will be held April 18, 2015.

    The new sign goes up for the Maysville Community and Technical College’s Licking Valley Campus on the Hilltop.
    Night Moves Tavern, 216 E. Pike Street, is now under new management with Suzi Cue bartending daily, and will be holding its grand re-opening soon.

  • Succulents for indoor bloom

    Plant collectors have long appreciated orchids and African violets for their winter bloom cycle.  
    I have amassed a collection of both and they help me get through the winter with their colorful interest. But violets and orchids are not the only classes of plants that can deliver in the winter; think succulents.  
    Succulents are plants that have adapted to environments that receive very little rainfall.  They can store moisture, using small amounts when needed.
