  • Churches need ‘Family Day’-like togetherness

Every Sunday afternoon in Placentia, Calif., the Watson family gathers for Family Day.
Although informal — most every Watson comes either barefoot or wearing flip flops — it has its own set of rules and rituals.
According to Jennifer (Watson) Fiamengo, the rules mainly pertain to the food served. If they grill hamburgers or hot dogs, her mother MUST make her family-famous macaroni salad. If they have Mexican food, her mother MUST make seven-layer dip.

  • Feeling your pain in my heart

Being known as a religion writer, sometimes people write or call me to tell about their experiences with God.
Sometimes they tell me of their theological ideas, which may or may not coincide with mine. Sometimes they tell of their own deep pain, past sin or present struggles.
Around Christmas I found an envelope on my chair, marked “personal and private.” Hand-delivered and from a woman in the community, it contained a handwritten letter several pages long, written from the woman’s “prayer closet” during the early morning hours.

  • Pain could be as much a virture as it is a curse

Last month, a man I know had surgery on his hand, the second surgery on the same hand.
After the first surgery his hand had lost quite a bit of feeling. On the one hand (no pun intended), that meant it didn’t hurt any more. But on the other, no feeling meant he couldn’t do his job, which requires using both hands and all his fingers.

  • To give or not to give

A woman called the newsroom looking for help.
She said she was a “sign flyer,” street lingo for “panhandler,” and that she felt targeted by local police who had issued her a $75 citation for approaching a car.
“I wasn’t violating the law,” she said.
She said she stands in front of a busy intersection near a shopping center and several restaurants, flying her sign that reads: “Breast cancer survivor — need help. God bless.”

  • Angels unaware

A few weeks ago, I did something I never do — I picked up a hitchhiker.
She wasn’t typical, if there is such a thing. She was older, maybe in her 70s.
While on my way to the market, she flagged me down as I approached the end of my street and asked if I would take her as far as I was going.
She said she had prayed for God to send someone, and that I was his answer, his “grace.”
