  • Sweet Mother! I will never forget you!

With Mother’s Day fresh in our minds, I am reminded of all mothers and the pivotal role they play in all our lives.
Whenever I think of precious memories from my childhood, I see a picture of my mother in most of my recollections. She was always there caring, nurturing, raising and loving me and my siblings.

A week or so ago, I spoke at a fundraising event for the George Washington Carver Community Center in Crystal River, Florida, near where I live.
The center is built on the footprint of the historic all-black George Washington Carver School.
I spoke to them about hope.
On Thursday, I also spoke about hope to some ladies at a local Presbyterian church.
Hope is one of my favorite topics, if not my very favorite. Without hope, I would shrivel and die.
    I suspect you would too.

  • Numbers Don’t Lie, Do They?

It appears university mathematicians have statistically concluded ‘organized’ religion will soon disappear in nine developed countries; people will no longer affiliate themselves with religion.
One conclusion suggests, “Americans without [religious] affiliation comprise the only religious group growing in all 50 states.”

How would you describe your church experience? Is it a safe place, or is it something else?
Kate Young Caley grew up loving a little church in Moultonboro, N.H. But when she was only 5, her father became ill and her mother took a job as a waitress where she was required to serve wine and beer, which violated the church’s covenant. Instead of helping them, their congregation voted to kick the family out of the church. As a result, they were shunned in the community.

  • Seek and you shall find a relationship with God

In our busy, over-loaded and booked lives it is hard for us as individuals to develop real close relationships, so we friend-up people on Facebook (some of whom we do not know), or follow someone on Twitter to gain friends.
We live on our cell phones and often think these ways will fill the void in our lives.
We want people to like us for who we are and to not get so close as to find out our weaknesses or failings or even those skeletons in our closets. We want these relationships on our terms with no other strings attached or we will drop them like a hot potato.

(Editor’s note: Nancy Kennedy is off this week, hopefully NOT working. This is one of her favorite columns from 2009.)

Today I scrubbed my kitchen floor, on my knees with a bucket of sudsy water and a brush, “Cinderella-style.”
After that I polished all the stainless steel and rubbed the countertops with stuff that made them gleam. Then I vacuumed all the wayward popcorn from underneath the couch cushions and cleaned both bathrooms.

  • Clean hands and pure hearts

As a Christian, I have a longing desire to grow in my knowledge of God. I never want to come to a point in my life when I can look back on times past and say that I was closer to Him then than I am now.
I have sadly witnessed so many individuals in my life that seemed to have had a more intimate relationship with Christ years ago than they do at present.
In my quest to have a deeper relationship with God, I find that few requirements are more important than purity of heart.
