  • “The little brown church in the vale”

It is difficult to think of personal things to write about in a column for a newspaper if you really think about it.
I try every once in a while to have a more personal story, especially from my childhood, for some of the readers to try and relate to and other times I pick a topic in the community and just spill out my thoughts.

  • Glory to God — and me too?

When I was a kid we used to listen to a record album of silly songs.
One song went: “Glory, glory, hallelujah. Teacher hit me with a ruler. She bopped me on the bean with a rotten tangerine….”
I can’t remember the rest. But even all these years later, whenever I hear the word “glory” that stupid song pops into my head. (And now it will pop into yours.)

  • A stroke of faith

Forty-one years ago, Steve Starnes played football alongside Al Cowlings and O.J. Simpson as the Buffalo Bills fifth-round draft pick out of the University of Tampa.
He also played for the Green Bay Packers and the (former) Boston Patriots.
He was big and burly. Then he injured his neck and his professional football career, the dream of many little boys and grown men, was cut short. Five years ago a stroke nearly took his life.

  • Disappointment with God

A few months ago, I got a letter from someone I’ll call “Emily.”
She wrote to ask for my encouragement, which is always humbling and I take these requests seriously.
Emily said she and her husband are both Christians, but right now neither is close to God. She said her husband is depressed and that makes her anxious and afraid, unsure of when and if it will end, and what will happen because of it.
