  • Disappointment with God

A few months ago, I got a letter from someone I’ll call “Emily.”
She wrote to ask for my encouragement, which is always humbling and I take these requests seriously.
Emily said she and her husband are both Christians, but right now neither is close to God. She said her husband is depressed and that makes her anxious and afraid, unsure of when and if it will end, and what will happen because of it.

  • The great cover up of 2011

In the continuing saga of my ongoing battle over household décor with my husband, this time it’s the back sliding glass door.
But before I get to that, let me back up to say that in the first 30 or so years of our marriage my husband rarely expressed an opinion about how to decorate the house except for one hard and fast rule: I could choose any color to paint the walls as long as it was antique or Navaho white.
Other than that I had free reign — and I love to reign.

  • She’s Gone fishin’

Last week while on my stay-at-home vacation, I went fishing.
For billions of people around the world, that news would be a big fat no big deal because it’s done all the time so ho hum, tell me something I don’t know.
However, for me, going fishing was a big fat very big deal because it was my first time ever.
At 56, I had never fished before, and for months now I have been wanting to, almost to the point of it being an obsession. I don’t know why I’ve been wanting to fish so badly, only that I have.

  • What can wash away all sin?

On May 30, 1978, the blood of Jesus cleansed me from all my sin.
Actually, that happened 2,000 years before that, but I didn’t know it until that day.
As my Jesus-anniversary present this year, I bought myself a CD of old hymns set to new music. It’s called “For All the Saints,” the third Indelible Grace project. (See www.igracemusic.com)

  • Me and change just don’t get along

Every so often my husband gets a certain look in his eye and then says, “Before you say no, hear me out.”
What comes next almost always involves a stepladder, can of spackle, his drill and a huge mess.
I remember the time he tore the spare bedroom apart and temporarily stored a bed in the front bathroom. For days I muttered, “There’s a bed in my bathroom!”
