  • Missing out on something wonderful

A few weeks ago, a 4.1 earthquake hit Yorba Linda, Calif., the town where I spent my teen years growing up and near where some of my family still lives.
My niece, Jennifer, was in the shower when the quake hit and things started shaking.
In all the years I lived in California that was among my top 10 greatest fears — to be in the shower and have an earthquake hit and be buried in a pile of debris while naked or in some stage of undress.
    I even named my fear“They’llFindMeNakedaphobia.”

  • Shall we brag?

One of my favorite stories is the one where my friend Mike announced that he had given up pride for Lent.
He was so proud of his decision, couldn’t wait to start. Just knew he’d nail it.
That was about seven or so years ago and we still laugh about it.

  • Men, tongues, words and wounds

In my (albeit feeble) defense, I had just come from undergoing a medical test done under sedation, which may or may not have loosened my tongue. Or maybe it was because I hadn’t eaten in 24 hours and hunger affected my brain.
Whatever the reason, I said something that embarrassed my husband.
We had stopped at a local restaurant for a burger. I ordered the thickest, beefiest, cheesiest burger on the menu, plus fries, and my husband ordered a veggie burger and a salad.

  • The hope for eternal life

When people ask me what I do at my job at the newspaper, specifically what topics I write about, I tell them the shorthand version: old people, dead people and God.
Actually, I cover a lot more than that, but those three — old people, dead people and God — are the three areas that seem to fall to me.
This past week I wrote stories about four people who had died, and only one of them I would consider old.
Of those four people, I attended three memorial services. As I write this, I have two services to attend in the coming week.

  • Attacking anxiety

    By: Nancy Kennedy
I suffer from a chronic disease and recently had a flare up, albeit a mild one.
I’m a hypochondriac, and in my case the disease manifests itself as anxiety. It started shortly after my husband had open-heart surgery six years ago this month. An elephant came and sat on my chest and refused to budge, and then strange, random twinges started twinge-ing and I could feel my heart beating, which is normally a good thing, except when I paid close attention to it, it would beat faster, which scared me, which made it beat even faster.
