  • Is Your Bible Falling Apart?

Stephen Covey asked the question, “What one thing could you do, that if you did it well and did it consistently would greatly benefit your personal life and your professional life?” Many, many people have responded with, “Read my Bible.”
Martin Luther read the Bible, especially the book of Romans until it exploded within him. He is credited with being one of the key players that started the Protestant Reformation that lasted for many years.

For Christmas I gave my husband Psalm 91.
Not all of it, just the first two verses:
“Whoever dwells in the shelter of the most high will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust.”
I found an artist on the Etsy website who hand paints scripture verses, white lettering on rustic gray paper.

  • Trust God and do what you can

As 2017 begins, I am reminded of a poem I read many years ago called “I am only one” by Edward Everett Hale.  In a world with so much trouble and problems, it is easy to get overwhelmed.  It is easy to wonder if I can make a difference in this life.
    The poem goes like this:

    “I am only one,
    But still I am one.
    I cannot do everything,
    But still I can do something;
And because I cannot do everything,
I will not refuse to do the something I can do.”

When my daughter, Laura, was 7 or so, I took her for swimming lessons at the community pool. She liked kicking while holding onto the pool’s side, and didn’t mind putting her face in the water. She even did quite well swimming across the pool.
But when it came time to jump off the diving board, she decided little girls weren’t meant to leap from a place of safety into a potentially unsafe place.

  • A CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION

    By Don Powell, Gideon’s

Christmas is a Christian holiday honoring the birth of Jesus Christ.
Traditionally, we celebrate Christmas on Dec. 25 around the world. No one knows for sure the correct date of Jesus’ birth, so we celebrate on Dec. 25.
Some say that the early Christians in Rome picked this date to counter the Roman holiday celebration of the Winter Soltice.

It seems the older I get, the less space I have in my brain, like all the file folders in the filing cabinet are full.
More often than I care to admit, I’ll write myself a quick note intending to develop it into a column later, but when later comes I’ll have no clue what I was thinking when I wrote the note.
However, all is not hopeless, as occasionally I go through my folder of assorted notes and cobble together a column of bits and pieces and random musings in the hope that something might be helpful to someone.

  • How do you live for God?

In 1998’s Saving Private Ryan, Tom Hanks is on a mission to pull a soldier out of harm’s way because three brothers were killed on the same day in battle.
When he meets Private Ryan and tells him the mission, Ryan questions the logic.
When asked what does the Army tell his mother who will have lost four sons, Ryan responds, “You can tell her that when you found me, I was with the only brothers I had left. And that there was no way I was deserting them. I think she’d understand that.” (www.imdb.com/title/tt0120815/quotes)
