  • A fight for shalom

It was a rare day off in the middle of the work week.
What to do? What to do?
My husband had called dibs on the computer and I had already caught up on the antics of the Real Housewives of both New York and New Jersey.
The only thing left to do was go out and get into a fight.
Actually, fighting topped my list, trumping reading online pop culture blogs, trumping even shopping for clothes I don’t need.
Beyond anything else I felt the need to fight — fight for peace, for the shalom of my soul.

  • He knows what we need

My friend Tara recently asked me about a book that swept through the Christian culture like a Category 4 hurricane back in 2000, “The Prayer of Jabez,” by Bruce Wilkinson.
Tara jokingly wondered aloud if maybe her pooh-poohing the book and not jumping on the “pray like Jabez” bandwagon was coming back to bite her in the butt. Maybe her life would be different if she had been a Jabez prayer pray-er.
If you’re not familiar with the book, here’s a mini crash course:

    MARY HENSON CIRCLE
On Tuesday, July 3 the Mary Henson Circle of Elmarch United Methodist Church met at the church for it’s monthly meeting.
Pauline Copes,  president, called the meeting to order with prayer by Mona Lucky.
Pastor Chad Chamnless was the guest speaker. He began with prayer and reading scriptures.
Chamnless gave the blessing for the meal.
The business began, and minutes were read by the secretary and approved.

  • Fundamentals of the faith

It’s seems we’re all recovering from something.
Recovering drug addicts, recovering alcoholics — I’m a recovering nice person.
For about a year or so I’ve been reading a blog for recovering Christian fundamentalists, “Stuff Fundies Like,” at www.stufffundieslike.com.

  • Travel time

When it comes to traveling, my oldest daughter thinks she’s cursed.
I don’t know about “cursed,” but she definitely has had her share of mishaps.
Last summer she and granddaughter Caroline took a trip from their home in Virginia to visit my other daughter in Charlotte, N.C.
The three of them went to Charleston, S.C. and Caroline barfed, which put a damper on their plans. Then Caroline stayed sick, ending Alison’s plans for a side trip to visit a friend on the way home.
