Every few years I go home.
Although home for me for the past 25 years has been here in Florida, “home” home is Southern California. My DNA is a combination Valley Girl and the OC.
Last week I went home to attend my only, and therefore by default, favorite sister’s 40th wedding anniversary party.
I missed her wedding 40 years ago when I was living in Maine and very, very pregnant with my daughter Alison, who also flew out to California from her home in Maryland, along with my favorite only granddaughter, Caroline.

(Editor’s note: Nancy Kennedy is on vacation this week. This is one of her favorite past columns.)

Today I did not go to Beall’s Outlet next to Publix in Inverness.
That may not mean much to you, but to me it was a major big deal.
Lately, I haven’t been able to stop at Publix without checking out the outlet. Even if I park far away I’ll say, “I need to walk more,” and head over to see what’s new at Beall’s.

  • A Kodak Moment With My Favorite Uncle

I was 8 years old and visiting my favorite uncle in Charlotte, North Carolina. Uncle George had older twin daughters but no son. There is where I entered the scene. I was the nephew he loved to buy for and to spoil.
On one particular visit we attended an exhibition baseball game featuring the 1954 Cincinnati Reds.
Uncle George had a great idea. We would go early to maybe get some autographs. We did so and I received the autographs of Roy McMillian, Gus Bell, Wally Post, Ted Kluszewski, Joe Nuxhall, Johnny Temple and Reds manager, Jimmy Dykes.

This past week I got an email from someone who has emailed me before, always with thoughtful, thought-provoking comments.
In this one he wrote, “Permit me to posit the following: Why not consider the word ‘Christian’ more as an adjective than a noun? That is, ‘I try to live a Christian life’ rather than tagging oneself with a label that could suggest a holier than thou attitude….”
