    SILAS BAPTIST

  • ‘Honey, let’s chat about pride’

Years ago, I attended a seminar at my church where the speaker, a pastor from a church in San Francisco, quite possibly the coolest city on earth, talked about the “counterintuitive way of doing church.”
He challenged us to make church a place where those outside the faith could feel welcome as they worked out their process.
Church, he said, should be a place that encourages questions, gives space for doubt and doesn’t demand that people make on-the-spot faith decisions. Church should be a safe place where people can try faith on, test it out.

  • “Daddy, I want to Hold Your Hand”

It was the end of yet another day at the office, I had just picked up my son from the day care, which happened to be in the same building as my office.
After returning to my office and packing up my computer and other paraphernalia, we stepped into the church auditorium (I am a minister), which gives me access to the parking lot.

  • Wanting and getting more

Once upon a time I had $3 pants.
Dark, forest-y green rayon pin-striped dress slacks, with teeny flecks of black in the fabric. Regularly $45 marked down to $14.29 with an additional 30 percent off, then another 70 percent off -- $3 pants!
I was so excited about my purchase that when I got them home I immediately put them in a place of honor in my closet and sat on my bed to admire my precious find.

  • Don’t play Go-Fish with Salvation

I have always been competitive, and I hate losing – ask my kids.
I understand why my children now gloat after beating me at cards, board games, etc. Not so with the grandkids, I keep them honest, but I don’t play cut throat.
Recently, while playing Go Fish, the 6-year-old, unaccustomed to playing three handed, constantly asked her brother for cards.
They both quickly caught on when they didn’t get a card they asked for and I would request it from them.

  • Who is worthy enough?

A few weeks ago, I wrote about a local pastor, Larry Silverman, of New Covenant Grace Fellowship.
Shortly after that I was dusting my bookcase and found a book Larry wrote, “The River is Here.”
The river in the title is taken from something Jesus said: “Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart’” (John 7:38, New Living Translation).
