  • Get happy, part two

A few weeks back I wrote about “What’s making me happy,” which got a great response from people.
Some sent emails or stopped me in the market to tell me what’s making them happy. Seems everyone was riding the happiness train.
But then someone pointed out that God never promised us happiness and that those who pursue it never obtain it.
There’s always a buzz kill in every crowd.
Still, the person had a good point and one worth exploring.

  • There is something about that name

Thanks to the miracle of my DVR, I just finished watching “The Bible” miniseries that ran on the History Channel for several weeks before Easter.
I wasn’t sure how I’d like it — I was afraid it would be filled with rewritten theological untruths. But it stayed true to the biblical text.
I especially loved the angels. No wimpy, girly-men with white dresses and wings. These were big, tough, Ninja warriors who took armies of the enemies of God’s people and crushed them.
    Hooray, God!

  • Amazing (yet disturbing) grace

One of my favorite authors is Jodi Picoult.
She writes love stories mixed with some controversial issue — stem cell research, faith healing, euthanasia, teen suicide — usually with a lengthy courtroom drama at the end.
Her books are impeccably researched. When she tackles an issue, she knows her stuff.
In her latest book, “The Storyteller,” she writes about the Holocaust.

  • Farewell to a Ragamuffin

Of all my well-worn, marked-up, pages-turned-down books, those written by Brennan Manning are among the most beaten up.
Former Roman Catholic priest Richard Francis Xavier “Brennan” Manning died April 12 at age 78.
His most famous book and one that’s beloved by millions is “The Ragamuffin Gospel.” In it, Manning proclaimed good news for the “bedraggled, beat-up and burnt out” — good news for me and for you.
