  • Letter to millennial cohort

     Dear young Christians of today,
On behalf of my generation and our helicopter parenting, overboard praising for tying your shoes and giving every one of you a trophy just for showing up, I am truly sorry.

  • Practicing for heaven

Generally when my friend Tara and I get together food is both talked about and consumed.
I taught her my secret to amazing stir-fry vegetables (season them with onion powder and dried red chili flakes), and she introduced me to pad thai and satay at a Thai restaurant.
Last Saturday, to celebrate her birthday, she and I and our husbands went to a seafood, prime rib and sushi buffet where we, as always, both talked about and consumed incredibly delicious food.

  • Listening for the sound of pig wings

Months ago I wrote a story for the newspaper about community leaders’ vision for the future.
Their vision is hugely aggressive, daring, interesting and bordering on the implausible. In this economy when businesses are closing right and left, their vision is downright laughable to some naysayers.

    BOYERS CHAPEL

  • I am not a professional photographer

True fact: I am not a professional photographer.
Another true fact: I am in desperate need of — something.
As I write this I’m sitting in a park pavilion early on a Saturday morning. I’m supposed to be taking photos of a kids’ triathlon for the newspaper, but right now, as the littlest kids are in the pool and on their bikes and running their little legs off, I’m NOT taking their pictures.
Recently, I bought a jazzy new camera, a red one, with a zoomy lens.

    CENTRAL CHRISTIAN
Central Christian Church will host Vacation Bible School (VBS) the week of June 3-7. The theme is “Colossal Coaster World.”

  • Saved by beauty

At my church we talk a lot about beauty.
The ancient Greeks and the early Christians elevated three prime virtues: truth, goodness and beauty, and as Russian novelist Dostoevsky wrote, “Beauty will save the world.”
A longing for beauty is primal. A lack of it brings despair.
