  • When Jesus' Followers Are Jerks

A few weeks ago I spent a Sunday afternoon at an outlet center in Orlando.

I love outlets and malls, even if I’m not interested in buying things (which is a big if since I’m always searching for that shiny, cozy, silky, whatevery thing that will once and for all completely satisfy my soul. But that’s a topic for another day.)

  • The Moon is Always Round

For the past month I have been working on stories for my newspaper’s month-long emphasis on breast cancer.
I’m up to my eyebrows in breast cancer research and have talked with a number of women who are either actively in treatment for this disease or are counting the months and years of being a survivor.
As it always happens whenever I write about a disease or medical condition, I convince myself that I’m next to get it. When my husband had open-heart surgery, I thought I had heart disease. It took three or four doctors to assure me that I did not.

  • My Front Door Message

Several weeks ago, one of the top trending stories on the Internet featured an email from a North Carolina church pastor that was sent to her parishioners.
Pastor Makeda Pennycooke of Freedom House Church in Charlotte, N.C., told church members that she wanted “white greeters only” at the front door before Sunday services. She said she wanted “the best of the best” out front, hoping to draw more people into the church.

  • The Secret is in the Dirt

What I know about growing plants can fill a thimble.
So, it’s no surprise to me that the cute little yellow flowering things I plopped in the dirt under my little something-or-other tree out front aren’t doing well.
Even the tree, half-leafy and half-not, looks like it needs something, but I don’t know what. Our neighbors all have lovely gardenesque areas under their trees and elsewhere. I’m thinking they know a secret.

  • Random Thoughts, Yadda-Yadda, Freedom and Grace

Here’s what’s on my mind this week:
