  • Hand in the candy jar

When I was about 10, my family lived in southern Louisiana. Hot and humid were understatements for the climate during the summer. We lived in a mobile home, in an open field, and the only a/c was in my parent’s room.
Sleep was miserable, especially for a roly-poly who sweats sitting still. The infamous line in our home was, “Go to sleep and you won’t be hot.”

Although I’m not a huge fan of doughnuts -- they’re not sweet enough for me to justify ingesting all those calories -- as soon as I walked into work the other day, I made a beeline for the box of Dunkin Donuts leftover from the day before.
Before I knew it, one of them made its way from the box and into my mouth.
I didn’t want to eat it, but I did anyway.

  • Sweet Mother! I will never forget you!

With Mother’s Day fresh in our minds, I am reminded of all mothers and the pivotal role they play in all our lives.
Whenever I think of precious memories from my childhood, I see a picture of my mother in most of my recollections. She was always there caring, nurturing, raising and loving me and my siblings.

  • Grace Notes

A week or so ago, I spoke at a fundraising event for the George Washington Carver Community Center in Crystal River, Florida, near where I live.
The center is built on the footprint of the historic all-black George Washington Carver School.
I spoke to them about hope.
On Thursday, I also spoke about hope to some ladies at a local Presbyterian church.
Hope is one of my favorite topics, if not my very favorite. Without hope, I would shrivel and die.
    I suspect you would too.

  • Numbers Don’t Lie, Do They?

It appears university mathematicians have statistically concluded ‘organized’ religion will soon disappear in nine developed countries; people will no longer affiliate themselves with religion.
One conclusion suggests, “Americans without [religious] affiliation comprise the only religious group growing in all 50 states.”
