    CITY ON A HILL

  • “We All Scream for Ice Cream”

Let me tell you something I enjoyed about the NCAA Basketball tournament besides the games, the commercials. I especially enjoyed the Capital One commercial featuring Samuel L. Jackson, Spike Lee and Charles Barkley.
In a 30-second commercial those three are sitting in a car together headed to the tournament site, San Antonio. Charles says he is excited to be able to visit the “A La Mode”. Jackson corrects him by saying, “Charles, it is Alamo.”

Easter has passed, but I’m still thinking about a part of the gospel story of Christ’s resurrection that I often miss.
    It happened on that Sunday.
Early in the morning the women had gone to the tomb where they had placed Christ’s body on Friday after his crucifixion.
The women found the tomb empty and an angel told them Jesus wasn’t there, that he had risen, just as he had said.
That part of the story I’ve never forgotten.
    But in Luke’s gospel, there’s a detour that I don’t often remember.

    CITY ON A HILL
Just a reminder that City on a Hill Church is no longer meeting at the old Berry Lumber Co. Building. We are now holding services every Sunday in the Community room at the Cynthiana-Harrison County Public Library.
Connect time is 9-9:45 a.m. for some recreation and Bible Study for our youth with the youth Pastor. Adults will also meet for fellowship in the community room at these times. Service will begin at 10 a.m. with live worship. Come as you are and worship with us.

  • God knows how fearful we are

I have an active imagination, so it doesn’t take much for my fears to take on a life of their own. I got a lot of practice growing up in the 80’s where every van was driven by a kidnapper—possibly a whole Satanic cult—that was looking to abduct me.

Years ago, I knew a feisty older woman who loved to say, “There’s nothing like a good smoting.”
She’d point out how, in the Bible, God was always smiting people -- and she had a list of people on her own smite list.
Don’t we all have people we’d rather smite than forgive?
Last month at the church in Tampa we frequently visit, the pastor talked about the words Jesus spoke from the cross, beginning with “Father, forgive them -- they don’t know what they’re doing.”

  • Easter Bunny at Cynthiana Christian Church

The Easter Bunny made an appearance at Cynthiana Christian Church on Saturday morning to meet and greet children and adults of all ages. The children participated in an Easter Egg Hunt outside the church, as well.

  • Follow the instructions

Listen to counsel and receive instruction, that you may be wise in your latter days. Proverbs 19:2
A study at Vanderbilt University Medical Center found that the instructions are confusing on the boxes of almost all over-the-counter cold medications for kids.  Researchers evaluated 182 parents as they read the directions and treated their children. Over 50 percent of the time, they got it wrong.
The researchers are recommending easier language with clearer graphics.

The other day a coworker was telling me about the time he got a huge insurance check after his house flooded and how he learned that if you have lots of money to spend at The Home Depot they treat you as if you were of a superior species.
